It is predicted that we will run out of fossil fuels in this century. Oil can last up to 50 years, natural gas up to 53 years, and coal up to 114 years. Yet, renewable energy is not popular enough, so emptying our reserves can speed up.

That statistics might not be too accurate. Nobody knows the actual amount of crude oil deposit in the US. That information is top secret. It is their reserve in the event of a major war

The oil in the oceans and seas are yet to be explored massively or even exploited in full, so oil might be around more than we think. The need for switching to sustainable and renewable source are because of the effect of fossil fuel on our environment, the atmosphere and on humans, if we would want to last longer and not go extinct soon, then renewable source is the way to go.
