Acquiring Education is one of those qualities usually identify with Nigerians in the southwest region of the country. Going by the way things are gradually turning out, one can only imagine and continue to ask the question of where the states in the region have gotten it wrong?

Some of the issues identified ranges from economy downturn to commitment on the path of the government to place premium on committing more resources into the sector.
Though institutions in the region still claim to rank top among institutions in other regions of the country, but that is not to say they are doing well.

The region is currently witnessing a trend that have continue to soil the reputation earned through absolute dedication to education decades ago.

There are situations where the level of street trading among young one are steadily on the rise, cultism is fast becoming a way of life among youths. Our youths have since lost faith in the system for a better future as a result many are engaged in Internet fraud and the trend have since degenerated to a level where crime related to rituals for money is on the rise.

Since the return to democratic rule the region have witness sharp decline in commitment, zeal and desire for Education.

It is becoming to seem as if our politicians are the once profiting from the problems. Thuggery has become an enviable profession among the youths, and it is so because politicians will rather give guns to the youths as replacement for books.

Our reward system is so bad that even graduating top of your class does not guarantee a better life.

We now have a situation where courses like Medicine, nursing, pharmacy now become the choice of many and this is not truly for the love for those courses but just for the fact that these courses are the only once with some level of guarantee for leaving above poverty line after graduation.

I once had a conversation with a profession of medicine from one of our foremost universities years ago and he expressed shock at the rate of applications the institution yearly receive from applicant whose only choice of course is in the faculty of medicine. Science classes that are the most scanty has now become the choice of the once who still believe education could still afford them a better life.

What happened to our reward system, almost all the state do not have a functional scholarship board. State are gradually handing off funding for state institutions. Hence, the growing tuition fees in our state own institutions.

At this time when we are faced with lot of vices birth by dwindling economy and scarce resources I think the only sector that our priorities should be focused on is the education sector, because we cannot afford to be loosing on both sides at the same time.

The situation is so bad that we still have primary and secondary schools in the southwest where pupils and students don’t have furniture in their class rooms, we still have class rooms that are practically not suitable for learning in our schools. Public primary schools is fast becoming a ghost of itself as parents who still value education sees those schools as places where their wards can never get value for time spent.

Government, parents and all stake holders must begin to pay more attention to these problems as we cannot afford a situation created by our nonchalant attitude towards our dying values which was long preserved by our founding fathers through their dedication towards making sure every child get unhindered access to quality education.
