Agbero Menace: A Plus Or A Minus To Tinubu's Candidacy? by Neatboy(m): 11:31am On May 10, 2022 |
THE OWO MI DA I am not against Tinubu's candidacy, but many indices are against his candidacy. And one of them is the Abgero Menace in Lagos. In Lagos, an average Lagosian believes that Tinubu is the grand patron of Agberos and street urchins and all the money collected forcefully from them are being remitted to him through his proxies. With the pain these urchins are inflicting on bike riders and trailer drivers who are mostly northerners and commercial bus drivers who in turn transfer the burden on commuters, do you think people are happy with Tinubu? I was so surprised that even cart pushers, barrow pushers and even the ones carrying the loads on their heads are still being tolled or force to pay money for carrying load on their own head! I have heard Yorubas complaining bitterly about his Candidacy, I have heard Hausas saying that they are waiting to embarrass him and to the Igbos, it is a no go! But can I shock you? Now listen, when I worked as an observer at Lagos Island, I discovered that these Agberos or street urchins all have voter's card. We were all shocked to see them file out to vote. As haggard as they looked or seemed, they still obeyed orders. And as uneducated as they are they still understand the power in the voter's card. They are more politically enlightened than an average Igbo petty businessmen on the street. It got to a time, I thought if he could stylishly disassociate himself from these Agberos at this auspicious political season, but no way! They are his soldiers. They can turn election around to his favour in Lagos anytime. Even the dunce amongst them understand the power of the PVC. Hating or not liking Tinubu is not enough to wrestle power from him-- This is a game of number and they understand this so well. If Tinubu wins this primary, forget it! He will coast his way easily to the presidency. But the fear in the heart of the majority of Lagosians is: if Tinubu becomes the president He'll embolden these urchins and agberos the more, and may even arm them to the teeth. If you don't have voter's card in Lagos or Nigeria your fear definitely will come to past, and you don't have any moral justification to condemn Tinubu cause he is playing his game well.
