The Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, on Wednesday summoned the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and other registered trade unions in Nigerian universities to an emergency meeting

Gambari will chair the meeting tagged “Tripartite-Plus”, scheduled to hold at Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa on Thursday evening in order to resolve ongoing industrial actions in the universities.

He also invited identified interest groups and civil societies organisations.

Apart from ASUU and NASU, other unions that have paralysed academic activities in the universities include: National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU).

The spokesman for the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Olajide Oshundun, in a formal notice sent to Daily Trust in Abuja, explained that Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, will host the meeting.

Oshundun said, “The Honourable Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, will host a Tripartite-Plus meeting between the government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other registered trade unions in Nigerian universities, as well as identified interest groups and civil societies, on the on-going industrial actions by the trade unions.

“The Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Agboola Gambari, will chair the meeting. The meeting is scheduled as follows: Thursday, 12th May, 2022 by 4.00pm”.

The university lecturers had on Monday extended its ongoing strike by twelve weeks, saying it did so with a view to giving the federal government ample opportunity to find lasting solutions to their demands. The development had generated a lot of outcry across the country.

Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU President, who announced this at the end of the union’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which was held in Abuja on Sunday, berated the government for treating issues at hand with levity.

Hmmm

Government only shakes body when their looting spree or activities are threatened- sequel to the planned protest by NANS to disrupt primary election;

They quickly supplied aviation fuel and attended to Aviation challenge.

Only ASUU knows how to hold government at the jugular and they get results unlike NLC.

They are occupied with their 2023 presidential ambition while education is at an all-time tottering level and hairsbreadth away from monumental total collapse.

If you don't support ASUU movements remember that if this government is permitted, Nigerian students will be paying 1m as school fees and they will crumble public tertiary institutions like primary and public school.

How can lecturers be paid #120,000 even a PHD holder gets paid around #150k+. The highest pay is 416k paid to professors that occupies about 4-5% of the population of staff. What about the paltry pay of others?! after over 20 years of tertiary education sometimes

Ordinary BSC in CBN, FIRS, NDA, NNPC, and other government parastatals earn extremely fat

NNPC Team Manager earns an average of about ₦ 1.19m monthly, Well Operations Superintendent earn up to ₦ 1.4m monthly and Human Resources Analysts earn around ₦665K.

The CBN staff salary structure is quite high but these salaries are not easily disclosed. The salaries below was inputed by some CBN staffs.

Deputy Governor CBN earns around ₦3.34m monthly, Branch Controller earns ₦900k and Managers earn around ₦700k.

The Entry level salary of FIRS employees ranges from ₦80,000 to ₦100,000 monthly. However, their ogas earn mammoth salaries

A level 8 staff of the PENCOM, at the end of his or her induction/recruitment training, get allowances in excess of over 2 million naira.

On monthly bases, level 8 Staff of the Commission earn around N180,000.

Unconfirmed reports of BOI suggest that some staff of the bank take home around N500,000 per month.

Not to mention DPR, Nimasa, NPA etc

you can abuse ASUU all you want but the fact is laid bare.

Most of these figures are far beyond what lecturers are paid.
Ask yourselves, students say they don't want to be lecturers because of perceived poor pay then with this trend, who will teach our children in the future when even the brightest brains are jetting out.

This should be a collective fight but ASUU must ensure no lecturer short-changes any student on resumption.

We didn't even talk about degree-less politicians fat salaries. Please don't quote me of you don't understand the plight of teachers in Nigeria. It's a collective fault. Primary and secondary school teachers are even worse in payment but the society doesn't care.

IamMichael.

I do hope they would find a lasting solution to it because the continuous strike action is very worrisome.

stop comparing apples to oranges please.

The institutions you mentioned make too much money for the government.

You don't expect to pay someone whose office generate billions daily ₦50,000 and complain when he steals. It's never done.

Compare ASUU with Nigeria police. Having said that, it is high time Nigeria education is deregulated to some extent. It's better to pay ₦500,000 per section and finish a course meant for five years in five years and not a day older. If you pay any less, you will balance off the payment by many years of strike and the worst thing to loose in life is time cause it's irreversible.

If you decide not to pay that much, you will sign a contract that will force you to work in public institution in Nigeria for a certain number of years before you japa. We can't pay for your school fees through subsidised education and the moment you finish, you run away.

I know many people will not be comfortable with my comment but "he who comes to equity must come with clean hands". If we citizens of Nigeria wants to hold the leaders accountable,we too should be accountable.

Let me see see how someone will pay 500,000 as school fees and ASUU will go on strike without the minister of education and labour not getting sacked the next day. Those ones are currently vying for president. Or a student will stay in that hostel in uniben and unn. We may not notice but these things destroy us psychologically and we raise students who don't attain perfection but microbiologists who work in banks

So all it took was a threat to disrupt THEIR political activities!!!

All the while some people believed that the strike was solely to benefit ASUU. Apart from the salary negotiation, 95% of other items on the list is for the benefit of students and the universities.

We pray something tangible comes out of this meeting so that students can go back to classes,.

Imagine! Those who train the NNPC, CBN etc staff should be paid less, since training those students in school does not directly generate funds to government coffers, abi? You seem to forget that the bane of all development is Human Capital development.

500k fees! So sayeth the elitist mind. The 500k you mentioned has never been seen or handled by some parents of first class students in some public universities. So what becomes their fate?
Students farm during rainy season and sell at a later time to fund their school fees. Students hawk cookies, fries...work as security personnel in hotels, banks etc just to afford fees. If it becomes 500k how do they survive that?

This government is useless and doesn't understand how the system of democracy works,is it the duty of the chief of staff to handle situations like this?

No wonder as the worst president in the history of mankind made a sharia judge the chief justice of Nigeria.

I wonder who taught these so-called billion generating people how to do the generation? and who will still teach the upcoming ones how to generate the billions for the Government.. Last time I checked, they all have to pass through these schools to 'make too much money for the Government'

Moh try to dey balance this equation small small, even if not to the same level.

Don't deceive yourself, about 500k school fees was suggested about ten years ago by the Babalakin panel. That's no more realistic according to the government. The new school fees won't be less than one million naira per session for single honours courses. Na trade your children go learn las las.

It is because of ignorant graduates like you that this nation is so backward.

Do you know how long it takes to make a professor?
Do you know how irreplaceable a professor is in training the nation's human capital?

Unfortunately for you, just like our dumb politicians, you think only in terms of CASH and not VALUE.

It doesn't dawn on you that CBN, FIRS, NNPC, NPA etc get their money by LAW and not by skill!?

Common sense does not tell you that a University anywhere in the world is not designed for Money generation as a sole purpose!? They attract money for research and use the monies to build capacity!

No wonder we have graduates who seem to have their brains frozen and locked up.

Please can you explain why the greatest countries in the world are those with the best R & D human assets?

It's amazing how you glorify those who have destroyed the economy of this nation by their policies to which they earn outrageous salaries because they "make more money"! SMH!!
