Amos-5 satellite in trouble? Israel’s Amos-5 satellite has certain unexplained problems. Reports suggest that Amos-5, which was launched in June 2011 to the new orbital position (for owners Spacecom) of 17 degrees East, has problems with its propulsion sub-systems. Amos-5 was placed at 17 degrees East specifically to attack “Africa’s emerging satellite services market”. The reports suggest that insurance giant Marsh has received notice that an insurance claim might be forthcoming. Spacecom declined to comment on the reports. Earlier this week Paris-based digital TV service OFIVE signed to join a French-language bouquet transmitting from Amos-5. Spacecom has also enjoyed success signing US up fresh contracts (via DRS Technical Services Ltd) for the Department of Defense for US Armed Forces services support. By Chris Forrester |

CPC CANVERSES FOR PAY-AS-YOU-GO PACKAGE FOR DSTV As part of efforts at assuaging aggrieved consumers of Digital Satellite Television (DSTV), the Consumer Protection Council (CPC)has advised Multichoice Nigeria Limited, the owners of the cable television to introduce pay-as-you-go subscription for its subscribers. CPC, at a recent meeting with top managers of DSTV, said the time was ripe for the introduction of the pay-as-you-go subscription in the interest of millions of subscribers of the satellite television. The agency sought to know the reason why this form of subscription could not be introduced in Nigeria as it has been done in other climes for the economic well-being of consumers. According to the Council, the pay-as-you-go subscription would allow consumers get value for their money, give them an option ofchoice as well as enable them control their consumption. Besides the suggested introduction of the pay-as-you-go subscription, the Council also canvassed for some form of compensation to subscribers for loss of transmission signals, usually experienced by them during adverse weather conditions, particularly rainy season, known as “rain fade”. Other issues discussed at the meeting included proper and adequate supervision of DSTV dealers and agents and seeming delay in resolution of consumer complaints by the company. Responding, the delegation from Multichoice Nigeria Limited disclosed that the firm did not have the platforms to implement pay-as-you-go system of payment but promised to look into it. The delegation explained further that Multichoice is an access-to-content selling company and could not determine what it could purchase or sell to the smallest unit which would allow a pay-as-you-go paymentsystem to function. On the issue of compensation for down-timesfor signals, Multichoice explained that loss of signals during the rainy period is a natural occurrence, which could hardly be curtailed, promising, however, to look into the Council’sposition that some form of compensation should be given to subscribers for this occurrence pending the development of a new technology that may solve the problem. The company pointed out that it has always been committed to speedy resolution of consumer complaints, stating that there may, however, be slight delay in resolution if the problems were technical in nature. While giving Multichoice the opportunity to further deliberate on the issues discussed at its management level, the Council was insistent that the Nigerian consumers must be given choices and options available in other countries and mandated the company to look into the above issues with despatch. http://allafrica.com/stories/201211160598.html |

@gadtor I use the amiko shd-8900 alien ..... Downsides 1. the opera browser is crap not worth it, better stick to PC for proper browsing 2. the shd-8900 has no blindscan so crap as well.....i guess later versions the alien 2 resolved that 3. the spark os is a bit overrated......no content (apps) appropriate to our region....mostly russian or german and are all piecemeal videos...other stbs now do youtube, picasa, weather, etc so nothing special there 4. awfully slow boot up time Upside 1. I have only one thing that i use it for....the webtv and that requires decent broadband speeds......webtv is live streaming tv channels on the internet.....mostly crap channels but then some still give joy hope my review is helpful....mind you it is amiko shd-8900 alien and not the alien 2 but not much difference from what I gather aside the blindscan and multiple tuners on the Amiko 2 |

Re: Free To Air Satellite Tv General Thread by gadotor(m): 11:59am On Nov 21, 2012 |
dvbguy: @gadtorThe amiko shd-8900 is twin tuners while amiko alien2 is tripple tuners, but I don,t know whether the chip type is different this time to boost the speed of web browser and web tv,that is why we need someone with the new versions ....amiko alien2 and amiko shd-8820 to tell us something,we are waiting, thank you |

Iron2011: pls, can someone also give his review on the said receiver?I was thinking of buying one after Ilish introduced this receiver to me sometime back. After reviewing comments from users in different forums I feel there is need to allow this product to grow. The negatives outweigh the positives (IMHO) but this is going to be a very good product if programmers come up with appropriate apps and existing bugs are checked. There are some products but very similar which 'reviewers' claim to be better than the Amiko. |

Re: Free To Air Satellite Tv General Thread by olenyi: 6:08am On Nov 22, 2012 |
D.lee: But if u look at it well, are they really a rival to d**v. I haven't seen any of thier channels that u can begin to compare to what d**v has to offer(ie for those dat subscribe to d**v). Multi tv doesn't have any special stuff that should give M.choice sleepless nigths. Anyway, lets see how this plays out. All-in-all, the customer will be the better for it. |
