Not some. Most. And it’s not a bad thing. There has to be a reason for doing something. I personally kind of stay away from those driving by the so-called money in IT. Back in the day when Computer Science was seen as a course for rejects and never-do-wells, and yahoo boys, it took passion to ignore all the insults and denigrating comments

I just graduated from high school last year, so I don't really know much about real life, that's why I still believe in coding for the love of it or "passion".

It still is now. Most Nigerian parents will never allow their offspring to study computer science. It is either medicine, engineering or law. I remember advising my cousin to study computer science. His parents said I don't wish their son well .

You are very right nah with war I take use study computer science.

I literally fought my father and my father's elder brother just to study it.

Same issue I had with my dad, he wanted me to study Medicine I wanted computer science, last Last I didn't even study any of the two.

Back then in Uni my project was in IOT + openCV

It's either person X is a full stack developer, frontend developer, or back end developer, using WXYZ stack all the time, why do I rarely come across people like person Z who is an IoT programmer, or person Y who just built a pothole detector with Open CV, Tensor flow etc, for a semi automated car prototype.
I feel like if some people like me here in this country are going to be motivated to pursue tech careers other than Web development, we'll need Nigerians to inspire and motivate us, let us believe that we are not lying to ourselves when we dream of these careers and that it is absolutely possible for Nigerians like us to do well in these fields.

I was an embedded system developer. Went into webdev and security cos of too much time wasted in travel time(The money was great nevertheless).
The most important thing is to be good in logic and any programming language(C++, java? python etc). Then you are good to go. Web dev is the thing maybe now cos a lot of company are going online. For college degree, go for pure computer science/ programming. Then you can enter in any service. Oil/gas, finance, medical etc.

Anyone can get learn javascript and design basic website, but it takes a great software developer to stand out in test of time.
So yeah go for it!

Fellow pythonista I understand your POV, 9ja devs are coding for a living, if all programmers in the world where Nigerian, then there probably won't be anything like Free and Open Source Software, I code for the passion and not really to survive, its cool when I get paid to do what I love though but its even cooler when your making your own unique ideas whether or not you get paid for it, Elon musk said a lot of people would rather settle for a boring job for the pay (paraphrased) instead of working on something exciting, its hard to imagine 9ja devs doing something cool at places like Tesla, SpaceX or neuralink when na only web development we dey practice.

Mark Zuckerberg didn't create Facebook just because someone was going to pay him for it, he made his own idea a reality and ended up earning billions because he invested in his own idea.

An example of something exciting I would love to participate in is Artificial Intelligence at Deepmind, a lot of "exciting" research and development goes on there, they're at the cutting edge of Artificial Intelligence. Isn't that exciting? Imagine working at NASA or SpaceX, and you're among the brilliant devs working together with the rest of the team (astronauts, aerospace engineers, astrophysicists etc) to put the first man on mars, amazing ryt? There are so many examples of exciting stuff. (But excitement differs from person to person)

Happy birthday. Do you have background in computer science?

I'm thinking of settling my foot in IT through bsc computer science specialising in cyber security. As am planning it. I ll be taking online courses too. I don't have background in any computer related field before. Should I forget bsc computer science and focus on learning from YouTubes and online courses and take certifications exams?
What is your advice please.
