Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa transited from military regime to a democratically elected civilian government which came into power on the 29th day of May, 1999. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, a retired Military General became the elected president of the country and was president between 1999 and 2007. Nigeria has practiced uninterrupted democracy for over two decades. The democracy brought positive developments in different areas of governance.
However, the country is facing myriads of challenges ranging from insecurity, unemployment, poor road network, inadequate supply of electricity, corruption, hunger and starvation etc.
These were the words of the coordinator/convener Anambra General Assembly Northern Block, an umbrella body of Anambra State citizens in Northern Nigeria and President General of the body in Niger State.
Arising from her inaugural meeting held in Suleja, Niger state, on Sunday the 24th day of April 2022,the Coordinator/Convener Anambra General Assembly Northern Block and President General of the body in Niger State Comrade Nnamdi Obi, spoke on a wide range of issues bothering our country Nigeria, the host state, Niger State and the entire Southeast.
In his view, he opined that the greatest problem our country Nigeria is facing now is the problem of insecurity. The coordinator/convener lamented that the spate of attacks by Bandits, Boko Haram , IPOB, Unknown gunmen is alarming. He wondered why the government has not been able to tackle the problem adequately even when we have the military and other security agencies on ground to do so.
He continued that many Nigerians have lost their lives while travelling on Nigerian roads not because of road accident or the bad roads but as a result of insecurity. He recalled that several attacks were carried out along Kaduna-Abuja road and other major roads in Nigeria and sometimes the assailants had a field day doing their business. He said Nigerians are tired of paying ransoms to the kidnappers and enemies of the country. He advised President Buhari to rise up to this challenge by flushing the enemies of this country out from their various hide outs using the military. He added that the military should be equipped with sophisticated weapons to achieve the desired expectation. He pleaded with Nigerians to assist the government in exposing where these criminal elements are in their various village/town forests. He added that communities can be encouraged by various state governments to form vigilante groups and work with the military and other security agencies to tackle this menace.
The comrade also said that it is laughable for anybody to suggest the use of external machineries in the fight against the enemies of this nation. He suggested that instead of hiring foreign fighters to assist Nigerians in tackling this monster, brave Nigerians [men and women] willing to fight boko haram and other groups to a standstill exist. The coordinator/convener added that the brave youths should be identified and used. He stressed that once identified and used; the youths can be of great assistance to the armed forces in exposing the hideouts of these bad elements and fighting them so that Nigeria can be safe again.
On the issue of the 2023 elections, the Comrade said that leadership is based on individual ability to rule. He said that any individual that has the grace to lead always leads well and that leadership is not based on political party though they are platforms created by politicians to emerge into different leadership positions. He stressed that no political party in the world will have in its manifesto the intention of killing her citizens and called on good Nigerians to arise and declare their interest in the leadership of the country. He thanked those that have indicated interest in the 2023 elections.
The comrade also used the medium to remind Nigerians that 2023 is the turn of the Igbos. He appealed to non Igbos to have the mind of God in them by dropping their ambition and supporting the Igbos to produce the next President. He wondered why the southwest should be interested in the President considering that in 1999-2007, a southwest indigene was president of the country, the southsouth also ruled the country for six years, and just in 2015-2023 a southwest indigene is occupying the position of the vice president. He wondered where the fear of God and fairness has gone. The comrade said that it amounts to gross injustice if political parties and politicians fail to zone 2023 presidential ticket to the southeast.
The comrade also used the medium to appreciate their host community on the peace existing in the state. He prayed for the continued peaceful coexistence of all. He also prayed the governor of Niger state to use every available means to eliminate boko haram, banditry, kidnapping and other vices from the state.
On the southeast, he frowned at the continued spate of insecurity and breakdown of law and order in the region and urged the governors of the region to immediately tighten up security in the region and restore peace. He advised them to quickly organize a well formidable security outfit to serve as a complementary local vigilante that will work with security agents to achieve an efficient and secured Southeast. He lamented that so many killings have been carried out by the unknown gunmen and wondered why the igbo’s will be killing themselves. He prayed God almighty to arise and fight for His people.
Comrade Obi advised Nigerians to be their brother’s keeper and be security conscious. He said that Nigerians should not relent in reporting cases of insecurity to the appropriate authority.
He concluded by saying that it should be inscripted in the mind of all meaningful Nigerians that Nigeria as a nation is created to be great and urged Nigerians to make Nigeria a great nation so that the labours of our heroes past will not be in vain.
