In a couple of hours, the iconic Wembley stadium in England will play host to the 2022 Finalissima cup final between the national team of Italy and the national team of Argentina.

The match, which sees the reigning Champions of Europe face the reigning Champions of South America has been one of the most anticipated football matches of the year by football fans all over the world because it will feature some elite footballers like the reigning Ballon D'or winner, Lionel Messi and the reigning European Player of the year, Jorginho.

As we continue to anticipate, let us take a look at three things about the final that you probably did not know.

1. This is not the first time such a match will be played
Finalissima, which is Italian for "grand final" used to be known as the Artemio Franchi Cup. It was last played 29 years ago.

2. The competition has only been played twice in history
The first edition of this final was played in 1985, between the winners of UEFA Euro 1984, France, and the winners of the 1983 Copa América, Uruguay. The European team hosted the final and beat Uruguay by 2 goals to nil to be crowned maiden Champions.

3. The next edition of the final was never played
What was supposed to be the second edition of the final four years later, when Netherlands won the UEFA Euro 1988 and Uruguay retained their Copa América in 1987, was never played due to the the inability of both teams to agree on a date for the match.

4. Argentina, one of today's finalists won the second edition of the final

In 1993, the winners of the 1991 Copa América, Argentina, and the winners of UEFA Euro 1992, Denmark played in the final and the South American team won it.

5. The final is returning after 29 years
After 29 long years, the competition has been relaunched after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between CONMEBOL and UEFA.

Lionel Messi will be looking to follow in Maradona's footsteps and deliver the trophy for the Albiceleste while the Italian team would be hoping to celebrate another Cup success in Wembley less than a year after winning the Euros there.
