Thomas Sowell Thoughts On Ibos, Do They Still Apply? by Nobody: 2:18am On Jun 05, 2022
So I just read Black rednecks and white liberals a fantastic book by American economist Thomas Sowell he describes Ibos in a very positive light but I think it no longer applies let me explain

While such individuals might be of any ethnic background, in Nigeria they were often from the Ibo tribe, in whose culture "thrift, resourcefulness and foresight were the principal themes.”44 Some Ibos “began trading with a few shillings or even a few pence derived from the sale of agricultural or jungle produce.” From there they proceeded to rise, step by step, as they “slightly enlarged their still very small scale of operations” until eventually
they were able to become established in retailing. “In practically all cases they were members of farming families.”

And here also;

"This suggests that what their enemies feel is not simply a need to be rid of them but also a need to rid them￾selves of feelings of inferiority by subjecting middleman minorities to humiliation and dehumanization. These middlemen—“their wealth inexplicable, their superiority intolerable”113—are basically an ego problem among those who have been so blatantly outper￾formed. This is also consistent with the history of the countries where middleman minorities have been either accepted or bitterly
opposed.

It is in precisely those times and places where there are few others who can supply the skills of middleman minorities that they are most hated—whether it is the Koreans in today’s American black ghettos, Jews in Eastern Poland in centuries past, Chinese in Southeast Asia, Armenians in regions of the Ottoman Empire where they were the predominant entrepreneurial group,
Lebanese in West Africa, Ibos in northern Nigeria, Indians in East Africa or others in other places. Where middleman minorities have been more accepted have been places where others have had similar skills and entrepreneurial occupations, such as the
United States, Australia, Britain, and the Scandinavian countries.

It has been precisely where middleman minorities have been most needed economically that they have been most hated, while places that have been not nearly as dependent on them have been places where they have found their greatest acceptance. This does
not present a very reassuring picture of human reasonableness, but neither does the history of most middleman minorities. "

Here he condemns black solidarity and also claims it does more damage to black americans than good, also note the similarity between black solidarity and IPOB solidarity

"More dangerously, group solidarity often means letting the lowest
common denominator shape the culture and life within the group and determine the direction of its future.
This can range from black students’ being accused of “acting white” for being conscientious about their studies to automatic criticisms of police actions against rioters or criminals. These are self-inflicted
wounds that can jeopardize the whole future of a people.

Repudiating criminals whose principal victims are members of their own group is imperative and casting aside counterproduc￾tive aspects of the group culture can be essential for advancement.
Contrary to popular belief, highly successful groups do not “all
stick together.” The history of such groups as the Jews, the Lebanese, the overseas Chinese, and others clearly belies this belief. Chinese American leaders, for example, at one time urged
San Francisco policemen—mostly white—to crack down on young Chinese hoodlums and gangsters, including administering “curbstone justice” with vigorous use of billy clubs. Moreover, some ele￾ments within the Chinese American community apparently took
their own actions, for the bound and gagged bodies of some of these criminals were found floating in San Francisco Bay.

Groupwide solidarity that includes hoodlums and criminals means absorbing enormous costs imposed on the rest of the ethnic community, not only directly as victims of crime, but also indirectly when businesses and jobs flee the community, leaving an economic wasteland.

Throughout the entire books he contradicts the notion that blacks are suffering because of slavery and racism and argues it is blacks own culture that have caused the present day suffering...
It's very interesting how he uses Ibos to prove his point unknown to him Ibos are guilty of many of the things he condemns in blacks.

Outside the murderous fulani Igbo are the most mentioned tribe today in Nigeria, and I can say for sure that they are a hard working bunch like other Nigerians, they live peaceful among all the ethnic groups in Nigeria and you will never see them make trouble wherever they are not only in Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic, Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, Kenya etc. But people keep on badmouthing Igbo for no just cause just because he's a Republican, his culture promotes hardworking, monogamy, perseverance, excellence, thrift, acquisition of new skills both formal and informal and expanding his horizons. All these contribute to his success. Igbo have never forcefully taken any person's land, they buy and at the end they seller will acuse of Igbo of being greedy. Due to poor handling of economy by non Igbo and there's hyperinflation, the Igbo will bring in cheaper goods others will call it fake, then when they bring in original from Germany, England etc they term Igbo greedy because high cost occasioned by buhari cow economic principles, Nigerians will not blame buhari but Igbo business and meanwhile Igbo also buy the same products. In Nigeria politics today, a section of Nigeria has been calling Igbo about their political miscalculations meanwhile Igbo is not buhari the umpire, inec is not headed by Igbo neither apc chairman or screening committee chairman. Igbo is termed 5%,dot,political mugu who begs presidency not fighting for it,but today they are begging for presidency as their entitlement and are planning to lay the blame of their misfortune and miscalculations on Igbo. In summary, the successes of Igbo by average among others are the underlining factors behind badmouthing Igbo.

-Well done, am also a Thomas Sowell fan. The man, who knows how to think, will be 92 by the end of this month but still makes a lot of sense.

-Thomas Sowell, an American Treasure.

-The only obstacle Ndi-Igbo have is being yorked in Nigeria by the British colonialist. The Nigerian experiment was promising at the beginning but the Igbo civilisation has outgrown the experiment. Hence, why Ndi-Igbo needs to move on.

In his young age, Thomas Sowell was a raging communists and must have known many Igbos within the extreme leftist circle in America where they came to study.

The Igbos back then were heavily involved in Marxist and communist movements on campuses in the west.

Thomas has since rescinded all Marxist ideology and is at the forefront against the Neo-liberal agenda.

My opinion being that , Thomas must have had a bias liking to Igbos since they were the only likely African students to embrace the Marxist ideology.

Why the Igbos were easily indoctrinated to Marxism against their other co-Nationals and African students in the west boiled down to how the Igbos so their own culture and heritage inferior and never wanted to market it like that of say the Yoruba, Awusa or Effik.

The igbos embraced the latest fad then since they also were the first to fully commit to western culture and education at the expense of their own heritage. You were more likely to meet an Igbo wearing a suit in London but a Yoruba or Awusa will wear his own traditional attire.

That inferiority complex later turned to arrogance when the Igbos dominated governance in precolonial and early post colonial times. Thus why they saw their new found positions and newly acquired westernized Marxism as far better than that of other natives. Hence why the Igbo senseless and arrogant Marxist coup of Jan 15

This was in the post
'This can range from black students’ being accused of “acting white” for being conscientious about their studies to automatic criticisms of police actions against rioters or criminals. These are self-inflicted wounds that can jeopardize the whole future of a people.'

His point is that any black man who takes education seriously and rejects the gangster culture of black americans will always be accused of acting like the white oppressors
