Traveling is fun, but it can also be costly. If you’re planning your next trip, here are some travel hacks to save you money and make your trip more enjoyable. Before you know it, you’ll be on your way to wherever it is you want to go!

1. Avoid the tourist trap restaurants

When on vacation, it can be tempting to spend all your time and money at fancy restaurants. However, if you’re trying to save money on your trip (and who isn’t?), it pays to stick with budget travel tips. For example, avoid tourist trap restaurants. When you look up a restaurant online or in a guidebook, be sure to check reviews from local foodies—they may have some excellent advice about where not to eat! Plan ahead: It’s easier than ever before to plan out your trips by using a number of helpful tools. For example, Google Flights and Hopper are great places for searching possible flight times and prices as well as predicting airfare trends throughout an upcoming season.

2. Use local supermarkets and grocery stores

Rather than flying halfway around the world to visit a novelty attraction, plan day trips that take you to local markets and grocery stores. Going native and blending in is not only a great way to save money on travel but also a fantastic way to learn about other cultures. It’s possible your adventure could even become an opportunity for you to explore your own culture; for example, if you’re cooking in someone else’s kitchen, it might inspire you to try new things at home too! Getting creative with dinner can be one of life’s little pleasures.

3. Get free Wi-Fi with your phone

Instead of paying high roaming fees, you can use your smartphone to get free Wi-Fi on a short trip. First, find out if there is free Wi-Fi in your hotel. If so, look for the network name and select it from your list of connections on your phone. Then go to a search engine like Google or Bing and type in free Wi-Fi followed by whatever city you are in (i.e., free Wi-Fi London). This will bring up a list of networks that are nearby that offer free access. The downside is that sometimes these networks aren't fast enough for streaming services such as Netflix or Hulu, but they're fine for basic tasks like checking email or surfing news sites.

4. Stay in an Airbnb instead of a hotel

Hotels are expensive. If you’re looking to save money, opt for an Airbnb instead. From your kitchen to your living room, Airbnb lets you rent out entire apartments and can be a huge money saver if you need to stay somewhere for an extended period of time. It also gives you more space than a hotel room, as well as full access to a kitchen where you can cook your own meals.

5. Talk to locals and other travelers

Whether you’re meeting a local business owner or traveling with your tour group, asking questions is an easy way to save money. Locals are often more than happy to give tips on where to go and what to do in their own city for little or no cost. If you meet people who have traveled to your destination before, ask them about their experience so that you can find out which attractions are worth visiting and which are likely scams. Tour guides generally have all kinds of insider knowledge that they can pass along—which may include things like free parking spots, free museum days, or free tours of famous landmarks. Just remember that not all information is true—and it’s always good to cross-reference resources.
