Let's take a few moments to define what a programming language is. This part will serve as a brief refresher for those with a programming background. Computers have strong components built in, such as CPUs, RAM, and so on. CPUs are capable of executing millions of instructions per second. How can we make the most of our computing and storage resources?

For instance, I'd like to handle payroll data for thousands of employees so that hundreds of products can be shown on an eCommerce website. Programming languages allow us to send instructions to computers so that they can carry out certain tasks. You may be familiar with high-level programming languages such as Java, Python, C, C++, PHP, COBOL,.NET, and BASIC.

Computers can only understand electronic signals, as we all know. Computers can only know two things: the presence of a signal (one) and the absence of a signal (two) (zero). For processing, computers use machine code (which consists of zeros and ones). How do we communicate with computers when they don't speak English, Spanish, or French?

High-level languages were invented by software professionals as a way to deliver instructions to CPUs to execute certain tasks. Simple keywords from ordinary English are used to create high-level languages, which send particular instructions to CPUs for each keyword. As a result, to conduct some computational activity, we create a set of statements in any high-level language.

A program is a collection of statements (code). This is referred to as coding or programming in the software industry. With that background, we'll look at one more fundamental notion.
