dfrost: Your laughter is not necessary were unknowingly coBaba I was in Ojota then but I saw unseriousness in the whole effort as it took a political undertone. A machinery was in place then, albeit the populacemplacent in the game. Back then I was convinced subsidy had to go. So nowhere near the Ojota crowd, and I even thought they were wrong. We should have that subsidy then. No two ways. It's dangerous to do it now because inflation is on the all time high. Well we should have. That is clear. But even back then, most Nigerians were still opposed to subsidy removal. The same arguments used then are used now. That's why it cannot go. Back then they complained about poverty and inflation. Same as now. When will we mature enough to remove it? And for crying out loud, why is our refineries not working? Why do we always take the longer route to solve a simple problem? Simple. Subsidy means refineries don't run at a profit. Subsidy roughly speaking means government forces the petrol sector to sell petrol and until 2013, diesel and kero, at a loss, and pays a subsidy that does not cover the loss. Also, the sector becomes dependent on free government money, which gets paid whatever the perfromance....which encourages sabotage and corruption. What we are seeing with our refineries took decades to happen. That;s why subsidy has to go, so that domestic refining would b eprofitable. Niger republic who we buy fuel from...does not subsidise fuel...and they have enough profit to keep their SORAZ refinery working.(And they are an oil producer too....the crude they use for their refinery is home produced. Not imported). That's also why out of 20 licences for refineries issued by 2020, only 6 are active. Who wants to refine fuel at a loss? Plus that subsidy money we spend could have helped with refineries. Instead, it is used to prevent NNPC from collapsing from subsidising fuel. And now NNPC cannot pay subventions to government because they are using every bit of money to subsidise fuel. No strngth to build new refineries or upgrade exisiting ones. For taxation, I support it but the question is what happens when a citizen needs an ambulance? Will it be provided? Will there be value for the taxes deducted? That is why democracy is more than just voting and going home....like most Nigerians seem to think. |

It's not the governors fault,as in not only Ondo state that is a civil servant state but the whole s/west,they all cannot generate revenue to sustain themselves, except lagos state.Ditto, south east, except Anambra state.the whole north are group of leeches, waiting for monthly federal allocation before they can pay salaries. You see how the oil wealth of the Niger Deltan is squandered to sustain non productive state in the name of one nigeria. The oil derivation fund should be increased to 50% because the s/south geo political zones do not benefits anything from this forced marriage. 2 Likes |

coputa: Draconian analysis, just because you occupy an area in the country that produces a commodity does not mean you monopolize it. No country in the world does that, it is not South South oil, it is Nigerian oil, even in the USA, only 3 states produce 90% of the food consumed by the entire country yet the ebenefits are shared nationwide. Nigeria first before ethnicity or religion, all land belongs to the federal government, until the 1999 Constitution is changed, this is not even debatable! |
