During the civil war, while Nigerian forces (to which the entire Mid West region (now Delta and Edo States) belonged to having never been part of Biafra as declared by Ojukwu) engaged in the massacre of Mid Western Igbos (Bendel Igbos) for being identified as Igbos even though they belonged to Nigerian territory not Biafra (a clear case of ethnic genocide outside the war which was to capture a lost Nigerian territory on the Biafran side) Igbanke people and Ikwere people (on the other side of old Eastern Nigeria) immediately declared themselves not to be Igbos as a self preservation mechanism while the rest of the Mid Western igbos were massacred by their own army (Nigerian Army). The war ended, most Bendel (now Delta) Igbos still deny their Igbo identity due to the trauma of the war. Igbanke who are originally Bendel Igbos remain in an abandoned area in Edo State while their kith and kind in Delta thrive in Delta State even currently having a Governor.
