So has the issue of shit carrying been resloved?
Have we decided that if carrying shit abroad pays the bills and puts food on the table for us and those at home then its not that bad?
Do we now agree that to carry shit abroad MAY pay more than working at some fancy job in Nigeria?
Or is there more disagreement on this diaspora and shit carrying business.

Question for thread starter, what exactly do you consider shit carrying abroad? I worked at a fast food restaurant and I believe it was very shitty but I think what I made in two weeks was more than many people make a month in Nigeria. Now I at a biology lab and I love this new job. So do you consider working at KFC shit packing?

Sometimes we have to start small before we reach the big time. You never start saying the alphabet from Z. So if you start of small as the lowest "shitpacker somehow you will move up to something better even if it is packing shit at a higher level. Maybe you are angry that some people leave nice jobs in Nigeria to pack shit, remember they are starting all over at a new country so maybe they will work up from whatever they are doing thats menial at the moment. Another way to look at it is more space is made available when people leave nice jobs to go pack shit else where.

I will eat shit money anytime as long as the food I buy with it does not have shit. It is better to work in a shit bowl than as a prostitute, drug dealer, murderer etc. God and society frown on those mentioned.

Of course I'm tired of the holier than thou attitude of some of these voluntary slaves. My own crux is that they should not debase us and our country because we choose to be free.

grin grin grin grin and yet millions of nigerians apply every year to enter voluntary slavery in the US through the visa lottery including many of the naija lovers here. na condition they make crayfish bend.

Isn't it ironic that the very same people who complain that "shitpackers" abroad degrade Nigerians at home (which by the way I'm not guilty of  cool), are the very first people to use derogatory comments against the very same Nigerians at home who :-

a.) Haven't got excellent jobs like them and
b.) Are just trying to make some headway for themselves in life

. . . and I still don't see how these "Ogas" in Nigeria are helping move Nigeria forward/helping their fellow Nigerians who are finding it hard to secure good jobs within the country.

Why won't people live and let live? (As our Oliver-De-Coque once said - Biri kam biri I'm very puzzled and I'm beginning to give up on understanding many Nigerians mentalities (Myself included by the way!)

thank God you agree that you are now bent. As for me, I hold my head up and I live free. I can do what I want and I don't feel inferior to anyone.

@wendymanda

please change your statement to read that when you were working in your fast food joint, you were making in a day, more than the labourer working in a fast food joint in Nigeria was making in a month. The start up pay for those "fancy jobs" you're taking about is $12,000 per annum. And any position above that level equals and even surpasses the per capita income in the USA($30,000-40,000 per annum or N3.8 million-N5 million per annum, which is equivalent to N300,000-N400,000 per month)

so I beg your pardon, those menial jobs in the USA and the UK do not pay more than the "fancy jobs" in Nigeria.

The only reason why most people go to far away places to do menial jobs is the unlikely probability of somebody they know seeing them at it.

If you went to UNILAG, I doubt that you would want to work in Mr. Biggs in Surulere or even anywhere in Lagos or even anywhere in Nigeria. It's just the shame.

Don't tell me your menial jobs in the US pay more than "fancy jobs" in Nigeria. Then why do foreigners, including those from the USA come to take up "fancy jobs" in Nigeria?

Abeg go to the jobs section on Nairaland and ask people the salary ranges of these fancy jobs and compare with what you're being paid.

It is when you people stop painting the streets in America with gold, the floors of their fastfood joints with dollars and the walls of their airport with multitudes of computers that your brothers will stop being deceived and stop running to the USA to get stranded like you.

Since a lot of more honest people have started confessing of what is really on ground, we have started feeling sorry for you.

There's a female friend of mine that lives in a basement in Chicago. She works at a might club for minimum pay. This girl regularly suffers deficiency of vitamin D and other seasonal affection disorders because she does not see the sun 90% of the time.

The only time she came to Nigeria, she had to stay with one of our mutual friends in order to prevent her family from making her over-spend money she scrounged for. Yet she will keep lying to them.

$4 billion dollars you people are saying is mostly money worked by yahoo-yahoo boys using boys based in the UK, South Africa and Netherlands as triangulated channels to recieve payments and Italian girls using their money to build houses for themselves in Benin. so just stop deceiving yourselves. Highest foreigner earner? Please!

Denex my man, I may not agree with you on most topics but you hit this one bang on target. How many graduates in Nigeria would be willing to work as super cleaners, chicken fryers, taxi drivers, prostitute, house maid etc?
You can carry your shit but don't come to nairaland and bemoan how bad things are in naija when you're working as a waiter in Chicago. Why should Nigeria be the biggest supplier of odd job men to America after Mexico.
Nigga please realize we have good jobs in Nigeria thats why we are not mopping floors in American restaurants.
At the end of the day, what makes me angry is the attitude of these Nigerians on nairaland. They don't know what constructive criticisms means. They come here just to tell us how bad Nigeria truly is without offering a solution.
Constructive criticisms is good, snobbery and sitting on a high horse is bad.

I have repeatedly said America was built by human beings and they are not super humans. China and India are going through an economic revolution now. Time will come when Nigeria with its natural and human resources we become an industrialized nation. If all Chinese had emigrated who would be building China now? @ PTH has already said more than I can.
I never said that working at the fast food restuarant was fancy or better than any fancy job in Nigeria. If I would make the same amount at the fast food places you named in Nigeria then I would probably work there no shame to it. But whether or not you want to admit it many Nigerians in Nigeria are unemployed and am sure that some will be willing to work at those restuarants that supposedly pay as much in Nigeria as it does in America. My point however was that you have to work your way up. I worked at that place while in high school, I just finished first year of college and am working in the Biology lab. Tell me how many Nigerians my age have that opportunity, even older. Don't pretend like you don't understand that there are more opportunities abroad. You cry that Nigerians are leaving by the droves to take up slave labor jobs, why is it that so many people are still unemployed?
What fancy job has a start up pay of $12000 per annum, please name it? If you think I consider where I worked fancy then please reread what I wrote? Like I said at the end you have to start small and build your way up. Everything from life expectancy is much higher abroad. Everyone in this forum wants Nigeria to become great better than it is now. Some help to fulfill this dream by sending money home from abroad while others stay and try to build it from within but don't make it seem that those that have left have jumped ship because all is not well.

For the person that said "
If all Chinese had emigrated who would be building China now?
"
There is a saying in Jamaica that Chinese people should never play football because if you give them a corner kick they will set up shop. Chinese are more abundant all over the world than Nigerians. Everywhere they go they start a business, whether or not people leave the country, especially countries where human resource is not lacking, does not hinder it from developing what hinders it is how the government uses the available resource and the matter of fact is that the Nigerian government is not very resourceful.

Millions of Nigerians work in Diaspora, some in truly dismal jobs, others in critical, high-placed jobs. It's a terrible thing that these guys are generalized as 'shit packers' and 'slaves'.
I struggle to understand why a certain outspoken fellow keeps boasting about being 'free' as if all Nigerians out of the country are suffering under the yoke of slavery. This is truly mind-boggling.

People migrate for different reasons. When Uk citizens migrate to Spain, Australia, New zealand nobody says anything. When Americans migrate to Canada, nobody says a thing. When French and italian people Migrate to England, nobody says a thing. Yet, when Nigerians migrate overseas, they are virtually insulted by some other Nigerians on Nairaland who claim to be doing the best jobs in Naija and think that every Nigerian in diaspora is a sh*t packer or dish washer. Within Nigeria, people migrate everyday to the major cities and that has not left the villages and small towns empty of people. If you claimed to be doing a very good job in Nigeria, would it not be natural that you will know a lot of people who are equally doing well overseas, hence change your thinking?

So, when I set out from my house in the morning and I see a white person, I would begin to think, Oh I am Inferior to this person. Is that the kind of thinking some of you have in Nairaland? Best to erase such a mentality if you have that concerning people here.

So, you say people (I suppose disaporans) are scared to leave their houses in the morning because of racists. What of whites that are scared to leave their houses because of black gang members and youth on the streets? What would you call that?

Some of us left very good paying jobs in Nigeria and are equally doing same type of work over here (with even better pay) so don't make conclusions about everyone in diaspora. To those of you saying that you have very good jobs in Nigeria, would you imagine what competition there would have been for the few very good jobs if many of the people overseas remained in Nigeria? At least we are emptying job spaces for people in Nigeria so that our unemployment level can reduce grin. We don't all go advertising the companies we work for in Nairaland.

Mr central bank a.k.a @paw-paw, Going by your earlier post:
"BREAKING NEWS
Naira to be re-denominated
The days of Nigerian cleaners abroad sending $10 and making a killing in the Naira is coming to an end".

I believe you can learn a thing or two about strengthening currency from countries that have done that, such as Brasil. Even if diasporans bring back their £ or $ and change it one for one, do you realise that what one naira is buying now will not be what one naira will buy when the currency is strengthened?  One naira will become much less, so with his/her new one naira, the diasporan will not have his purchasing power reduced! Your "whatever" naira you are earning now will be significantly reduced and should still give you same purchasing power. I hope the think tanks in your Organisation have done their jobs very well (and hope you don't represent their thinking), else I will be scared for this new policy.
