KiNg0G: You obviously didn't carry out any research before creating this thread. Wizkid shot out from a modern or refurbished slave trade label, EME and that really helped put him in the spotlight. Not in anyway shading Wizkid nor taking anything away from his success, he's good and no one can change that. On the other hand, the 2 people who should really be on that list are Olamide and Davido, as there are no records of their successes tied to any known record labels neither were there rich promoters or label bosses to help them grow. Saying the collaboration between Olamide and Wizkid 'Omoto shan' brought Olamide out shows your half baked knowledge of the same topic you created. Saying also that Olamide's first ground breaking single wasn't known in the South or East, since when have those places been the headquarters of Nigerian music? You want to make it big as an artist, you have to find your way down West. The Erriga that is a raging storm in the South is not even known here in the West, na only very few street guys for here dey vibe to hin songs. Does that mean he isn't doing fine? Nahhh, he is. The fact that Olamide's 'Eniduro' wasn't played in the South or East doesn't mean it wasn't successful, matter of fact, it went platinum here in the West and that song launced his career. Always get your facts right. Peace unto you. 3 Likes |

Op stop abeg, if nah joke stop am now. That omotoshun brought Olamide to lime light! That shows you were limiting your view to your street alone. I knew Olamide before Wizkid, funny is that Wizkid was the underdog in that song. Eni Duro was a bigger hit to Omotoshun anytime any day. Omotoshun was what made Wizkid endeared to the street. Eni Duro was played to far north. I did my secondary school in the north. Alaba boys did wonders and Danfo Drivers were all stars duo ask anyone who travel wide in Nigeria. 4 Likes |

Nonsense. Wizkid and Davido didn't do shit. The birth of YouTube started the revolution before other music platform joined. For example in late 90s and early 2000, it was really had to get naija music and movies abroad, we paid premium for it. But the birth of YouTube in 2005 changed that. Hence, it's technology that render godfatherism useless. 2 Likes |

Tonero5200:Did they give birth to you yesterday? Nigeria has had many stars that were never connected to any record labels. In Nigeria once your music was good, it was going to go far record label or not. Whatever Davido and wizkid are enjoying now it’s on the foundation of what those guys built. After they built that foundation that’s y till today even an upcoming Nigeria musician can sell out a foreign venue 1 Like |

GUNITGuy: Firstly they didn't package shit to compete with Americans. The most constant thing in life is change. Naija music has always been dynamic and there are different genre. Baba fryo, danfo driver, father u turn, daddy fresh, gravity, daddy showkey just to mention few have their own genre which is ahegunle galala. You have people Blackky, Zito etc with their genre. And you Majek Fashek who was already international with his reggae influenced with talking drum. AIT started in late 96. Seyi Shodimu already released one or 2 tracks, same with Mc that sang allen avenue. Lots of us that time were already singing boyz to men, memorizing tupac and Biggie rhymes. Remedies went to meet Kennies so they can use AIT to air their music. I remember Kenny gave them the opportunity to perform life - shakomo. And people loved it. Kenny and Dayo used the opportunity to start a label using AIT (own by Kenny in-law) to make money. And AIT started lunch break program anchored by Jumini Adegbesan and sometimes with Tosin Odukoya. My point is don't call those guys nobodies, they were already known in their areas before AIT came. Without AIT, they would still be prominent because naija hip-hop (as it was called them was ascending). Kennies were just cashing out because they had the TV, and AIT was the only TV transmitting 24/7 then (they started it). So it was normal to be looking forward to lunch break with Juobi at 12pm-2pm. 1 Like |

Ilaje1:The guy is just talking rubbish and people who don’t know Nigerian music or the trends of how the industry went is believing, even before technology there were some Nigerian musician that weren’t connected to any record labels that come out and put the whole country on notice, some people actually forgot people like style plus existed, even when mi came out and took the whole Industry by storm they thought It was by record label. Whatever these new generation is enjoying was based on the foundation the previous generations set, the previous generation set such a strong foundation that people in the world have tested and proven Nigerian music and it’s artist, and know it’s a force to reckon with 2 Likes |

lathrowinger: Na you be mumu. D'banj was a 419 guy. Go listen to his first song, mo bo lowo won (his story of how he escaped from a bank). Jazzy was playing drums for Jide Chords (I'm sure you don't know him) and also in 419 squad (which was owned by JJC, funke akindele's husband). JJC never saw D'banj as talented person like that apart from playing mouth organ so he was a partial member of 419 squad, while Don was their producer. Yeah, it is true D'banj told Don that they can be their own boss instead of working for JJC. |

gibsonwales: They didn't monopolized. They just had the facilities, AIT and Ray Power. Which artist wouldn't like to be on the #1 TV and radio station that time? You know TV used to start at 4pm and close by 12. AIT started 24/7 TV and radio. Although there were clapperboard and DBN before Ait. DBN would do 8am-12 and close then open again at 4pm till 12pm. 1 Like |

Konjiboii:Nigeria artists of old was extreme talented. Like u said it’s social media that’s saving this generation, if wizkid and Davido existed at that era by now they would have totally gone under with nobody listening to their music. The quality of songs wizkid and Davido has been releasing of late is low, but based on their millions of followers on social media once they let them know then post it, by the time people start listening here and there they get used to it. But back then ur quality of song is tested on the radio station, if e no make sense nobody go buy ur disc. 6 Likes |

Vinnie2000: You be mumu calling Baba Fryo, Daddy Showkey low class music. You be proper ode. Every music has his own time. Showkey and Co and been in the game since 1990 (officially)..they are ajegunle made music. Naija hip-hop was in ascendancy in 94 with Boz to men, Tupac and Biggie at their peak. Even Kennies still produced the likes of Showkey, daddy fresh, father u turn ft pasuma - Yetunde. Because there was market for it. Even Danfo driver was still during Kennies. So Kennies didnt not revolutionized shit, Naija music had always been dynamic. We had people like Alex o, Zito, Daniel Wilson, Edna Okoli, Yellow man etc before them. And they were also Juju, reggae , fuji, high life etc on the other side. Music basically change in naija and you have to change with it. And to original poster that said wisky and Davido changed reduced godfatherism is talking nonsense. It is technology that changed things and this is not peculiar to Nigeria alone but the world. 2 Likes |
