According to Britannica, that idea came from the European perception of God during Medieval times. So, it is hard or should I say, even wrong to conclude that Christianity, as a whole, a very diverse religion in and of itself, promoted the idea.

The case didn't get to trial so that statement is very wrong.
No court ruled him innocent.
