Moscow has threatened EU and NATO member Lithuania by saying it will take measures to defend its national interests unless the transit of goods to Russia's Kaliningrad exclave is swiftly restored.

Lithuanian authorities have banned the movement of goods which are sanctioned by the European Union across its territory - which includes the only rail route between mainland Russia and the province which is sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania.
Banned goods include coal, metals, construction materials and advanced technology.

Russia's foreign ministry has summoned Lithuania's top envoy in Moscow while the Kremlin said the situation was a "violation of everything". "The situation is more than serious," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "This decision is really unprecedented. It's a violation of everything." Russia's foreign ministry demanded Lithuania immediately reverses what it cast as an "openly hostile" move.

"If cargo transit between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of the Russian Federation via Lithuania is not fully restored in the near future, then Russia reserves the right to take actions to protect its national interests," the ministry said.

Lithuania said it was merely implementing EU sanctions, part of a swathe of measures intended to punish Russian President Vladimir Putin for the invasion of Ukraine.

"It's not Lithuania doing anything: it's European sanctions that started working from 17 June," Lithuanian foreign minister Gabrielius Landsbergis told reporters in Luxembourg.

"It was done with consultation from European Commission and under European Commission guidelines," Mr Landsbergis said.

Lithuania's state-owned railway informed clients that from 17 June sanctioned goods such as steel and iron would not be permitted to cross Lithuania, he added.

Regarding questions about Lithuania and the blockade of Kaliningrad.

In my opinion, this is an attempt by the EU to put pressure on Moscow to resume gas supplies via Nord Stream. Links to treaties are now worthless - everything that is beneficial to violate will be violated. It makes no sense to cling to papers now. Most likely, Europe decided that as a response to the complete cessation of gas supplies to the EU, they will organize a land blockade of Kaliningrad, which will put the Russian Federation in front of the need to solve the issues of supplying Kaliningrad by sea and air (although against the backdrop of Germany's problems with entire industries without Russian gas, are flowers). It is important to understand that Lithuania depends primarily on the United States and Britain, and they benefit from both the blockade of Kaliningrad and the collapse of the German economy. Therefore, in the medium term, a land blockade of Kaliningrad is very likely.

The forceful breakthrough of this blockade and the solution of the problem of the "Polish corridor" means first a conventional, and then a nuclear war with NATO. Hence the increased talk about "nuclear deterrence" in order to try to keep this scenario within the framework of a conventional war.

First it was Japan and now Finland has announced the opening of the border with Russia for tourists from June 30.
Georgia President said they will never put sanctions on Russia.

EU Rep to Russia is meeting with Russia rep in Moscow to discuss the transit ban by Lithuanian on Russia railways after Russia said they will unblock the rail by military.

What happened? Is Finland's economy collapsing? Are local manufacturers & hotels bankrupt? How does this fit in with the EU's overall goals regarding sanctions against Russia?

Earlier Lithuania itself stated that the restrictions were introduced under the leadership of the EC.

Now, the EC shifted the responsibility for restricting Kaliningrad transit to Lithuania

"Since Lithuania has begun to implement the sanctions in this way, it means that they should be interpreted this way," said European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer.

Ederer said after a meeting at the ministry that he had asked Russia to resolve the issue through diplomatic means as Russia vowed to solve it by military way and they does not care if Lithuania is a NATO member or not.
