Hello, good day I am new to using Nairaland to chat
Please I just wanted to know if using a family member as a sponsor affects your chances in applying for school in USA
Denc:
On standardized tests:

Graduate schools in North America as well as other continents like the GMAT or GRE.
Why do admissions committee/staff/team like standardized tests?
- the official reason is "standardized test score is a predictor of a candidate's performance in the graduate program ..."
- the (additional) unstated reason is that it makes their work easy.

Rememba, oyibo no like stress!
What is the simplest way for a program that receives thousands of applications - yes thousands - from all over the world to select candidates?
Get all the applicants to input a standard metric (e.g. test score) and once they click "Submit", any software including a basic spreadsheet can sort all the applicants in seconds.

Note that GMAT/GRE scores are factored into the ranking of the schools and in developed economies, people read i.e. look at rankings and/or reviews to decide which school/program to apply to. As schools are concerned about ranking i.e. perception, they tend to guard their score range for admission. Hence, top schools across the world have average GMAT ~700 while GRE ~330.

Please, disregard posts that say standardized tests has little impact on funding.
Despite the trend of these tests being optional in recent application cycles of US schools, many still insist that for an applicant to get top dollar i.e. full funding, one must submit competitive tests scores [from (say) ETS for GRE or GMAC for GMAT]

Be wise, do not believe everything you read. Do own independent investigation.

Good evening house. Please who has done a PhD interview? I have listened to some videos and readsome tips online but I still need urgent help from a direct person from this side who has experienced it.

It seems the person that quoted you thought you were asking about visa interview. If you're asking about PhD interview done before being given an offer, you would need to answer this question before I could give you some tips:

Is the interview with (1) a specific faculty (2) group or (3) faculty but at separate times?

Your answers would give people indications on what you should be focusing on.

Hello, I'm curious if you already used your DropBox privilege I want to assume that you got a two-year visa for your Spring, so why do you have to look for an interview date again?

I transferred my SEVIS to a new school before I came to Nigeria. In tahr case, if you didn’t travel within 5 months, the visa expired since the SEVIS has been terminated

Hello everyone, please I want to seek guidance on a matter...
I attempted an F1 visa in June 2022, which unfortunately resulted in a denial. Currently, I am reapplying B1B2 visa.
I am interested in understanding if there would be any complications at the embassy.

Have gotten my visa fee since October 2023, still unable to get interview date till date...

Also, can I apply for Emergency date and what tangible reason do y'all think should be my reason for applying for an emergency interview date which won't result to a denial ?

I will be looking forward to your responses.
Thank you in advance 🙏

Hey 🤠

You do not need someone who have done a PhD F1 visa interview before and if at all you will need such person , then he or she has to be the person who is in the exact same situation like you . That was why all the videos and tips you got online did not satisfy you naturally because your instinct told you that you are still not getting what you want .

1. If you are going for PhD in Biochemistry and you are studying the transcripts of someone who got government scholarship to study PhD in Educational Psychology do you think that transcripts will work for you ?

2. If you tell me your present situation ie , program of study , your Alma Mata (Bsc and MSc ) , post graduation plans, family situations etc , then i can be able to handle your mock (possible questions and answers) trainings .

Best Wishes 🙏

If you don’t have any good reason(s) for using emergency appointment then don’t bother using it just pick the date you see or keep checking thrice a day , join groups or find someone to get you a date . F&B visas are non immigrant visas and the threshold for qualification for both is for you to return to your country after your study and visit plus other markers known to the V.O interviewing you.

It is a PhD admission interview in Communication. It is an online interview that will likely feature three persons in the panel. The interview is scheduled for tomorrow. I have a bachelors and masters degree and I am married with three children. Would be so grateful if you can tell me what the transcript will look like. Thank you.

Hey 🤠

Its a mixed up. I thought you were going for the main F1 visa interview .

1. Your PhD interview will last about 25 -30 minutes (based on my personal experiences) and will usually be done by the senior person that is on the selection committee, or perhaps two people on the selection committee.

2. And the interview should include questions that concern your academic achievements, field of research, motivation for applying, future academic goals etc.

3. I have to know your specific area of study as well as the institution you have applied to in order to be specific in my panel Questions and Answers outline . You can direct that to me personally .

Best Wishes 🙏

Hey 🤠

1. That you have applied and denied an F1 visa before will not affect your present visa application because both visa qualification outlines are different . Your duty is to proof to the consular why you think you qualify for your present B1/B2.

2. Another aspect is that be ready to explain (in your DS 160) or verbally to the consular why your F1 application was denied .

3. If you think that what you are going for is of utmost importance and you have to be there by all means , then you are free to apply for the emergency Appointment since you have bought your MRV and your CGI portal has given you the option .

.4. Nobody on B1/B2 visa application can get his or her desired date in this year 2024 by looking out for date on reschedule option . You have to use the emergency Appointment option to indicate your desired (tentative travel date) but you must fall under , MEDICAL, STUDY or BUSINESS emergency.

Hi, I have been in this position before and am ready to help if you are still unsure of what it will look like. But basically they've found your application worthy and possibly one of the best in the pool. So they want to get to know you, your goals and what you have done before. You must be ready to discuss some of your previous research with the panel and how they relate to what you are planning to study. They also want you to know them and their research areas. The process is usually interactive and you should exude some level of confidence while talking to them because they would want to assess your confidence level in the classroom with their students (if you'd be securing an assistantship).

Be ready to speak about yourself – educational background, research background, previous internships and work experiences that may tie into your PhD program interest. Talk about previous conference presentations, published papers, previous awards, or papers that garnered media attention (if any of these apply to you).

Be ready to talk about how you selected this program, your research interest(s) and how a prospective doctoral training enables you fulfill your research interest and career goals. Clearly articulate your research interest and state how your research interest ties to the work of current faculty. I do not know if you identified a graduate advisor/mentor during your application but if you did, ensure that you state that your work is aligned with that graduate advisor’s work. If you did not, look through the faculty page and state that how your prospective research work will benefit from the similar work done by specific faculty. Also, be prepared to talk about career goals after your PhD - academia or something else.

You may be asked about behavioral questions -- things like your strengths, weaknesses, how you handle workplace dispute, and how you work with difficult co-workers. When you respond, respond with examples of previous experiences. Avoid just listing your strengths or weakness, include examples of situations where your strengths were demonstrated. Think about potential weakness and try and turn that into a strength. There are examples of this online. Even if you may not have worked with a difficult coworker, you can let them know how you would handle this if you are ever in a situation like this.

If you know the panel members who will be interviewing you, you can google them to have an idea of their research areas. If it is not too late, try emailing current students who work with them to get an idea of who they are and you can even state this during the interview. This will demonstrate some genuine interest in the program.

Finally, remember to talk slowly, breathe, smile, and demonstrate enthusiasm about the program and how it fits with your career goals. I do not know if you have any idea of the city where the university is located, but you can state that your interest in the city is another factor behind your interest in the program.

Have about 3-4 questions prepared for the panelists. You will likely have an opportunity to ask them questions. Think deeply about the questions and make sure that they are relevant – things like program funding for assistantships, program funding for conference presentations, graduate mentorship, opportunities to publish first-authored papers etc.

Don’t forget to send each of them a thank you email after the interview thanking them for their time, how the interview has solidified your interest in their program, and that you are looking forward to starting the doctoral program in Fall 24.

If you are in Nigeria, it goes without saying to ensure that you have uninterrupted power and internet supply during your interview.

Good luck with your interview!!

Hello, good day I am new to using Nairaland to chat
Please I just wanted to know if using a family member as a sponsor affects your chances in applying for school in USA

A family member can be used as a sponsor per pursuit of US study visa.
Only the US Embassy & Consulate in Nigeria can state the chances/probability/odds of an applicant sponsored by a family member.

Again, disregard any assertion/claim/statement by any one else whether written or verbal irrespective of the person's title (e.g. "mock interviewer", "group admin.", "travel agent", "immigration consultant") or location (Nigeria or US) or immigration status (including citizen).

For context, consider reading these posts:

The day keep changing right? Or it’s statistic? For instance, Lagos can be a month at some point?

They asked me to explain how chromatography works (which I got correctly)

Some calculation about converting something from another (got it)

Basically , they will ask you chemistry questions.

Where I failed the interview were when they start asking behavioral questions about when I start teaching, how will I handle this and that..lol
