State-level PDP chapters have rejected requests from supporters of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike to fire party National Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu due to a developing crisis within the party. They claimed that asking Ayu to resign would harm the party's chances of winning the 2023 presidential election. The pro-Wike camp had accused Ayu of supporting the party's presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who allegedly did not follow democratic procedures in choosing his running mate. The pro-Wike camp had been incensed by the loss of the vice-presidential position to Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa.
