Boris Johnson is fighting to save his premiership, with a group of cabinet ministers set to tell him to resign.

The prime minister has been hit by a wave of resignations, with one in five MPs with government roles quitting since Tuesday.

At Prime Minister's Questions he said he had a "colossal mandate" from the 2019 election and would "keep going".

But ministers are continuing to resign, with more Tory backbenchers turning against him.

Several cabinet ministers, including Chief Whip Chris Heaton-Harris and Welsh Secretary Simon Hart, are about to tell him to go, the BBC has been told.

Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis and Transport Secretary Grant Shapps intend to join the delegation, BBC political editor Chris Mason says.

It comes after earlier Michael Gove, current Levelling Up Secretary and former leadership rival to Mr Johnson, called on the PM to leave office.

Mr Johnson is currently in Parliament, making a scheduled appearance before a committee of senior MPs, answering questions on integrity in public life and honesty.

Tory party bosses on the executive of the backbench 1922 committee are also meeting, as questions over Mr Johnson's future continue to swirl.

Mr Johnson faces a threat from Conservative rebels who want to change party rules to allow another no-confidence vote in him.

He survived such a vote last month, and under the rules as they currently stand he would be immune from another challenge for a year.

Mr Johnson's premiership has been plunged into crisis following the dramatic resignations of Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid.

They quit within minutes of each other on Tuesday, following a row over Mr Johnson's decision to appoint Chris Pincher deputy chief whip earlier this year.

Their departures have triggered a wave of further resignations, with Kemi Badenoch, Alex Burghart, Neil O'Brien, Julia Lopez and Alex Burghart among the latest departures.

A senior ally of the prime minister told the BBC: "It's now a question of how he exits," adding the situation was "not sustainable".
