Boris Johnson UK Prime Minister and the controversial leader of Great Britain, decided to step down on Thursday after days of defections rendered him unable to lead.

After one of Johnson's closest allies, Treasury Chief Nadhim Zahawi, urged the prime minister to step down for the benefit of the nation, Johnson ultimately decided to do so.

It was not immediately clear if Johnson will continue serving as prime minister while the Conservative Party elects a new leader, who will also serve as party leader. Later on Thursday, a formal statement is anticipated.
