Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State made it clear that he was not interested in running as the vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the general election of 2023, according to Sule Lamido, a former governor of Jigawa State.

The outcome of the opposition party's presidential primary and the selection of Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of Delta State, as Alhaji Atiku Abubakar's running mate, precipitated a crisis that led the party to start working on a reconciliation.

Ayo Fayose, a former governor of Ekiti State, and Samuel Ortom, the governor of Benue State, were among the party officials who had criticized the party's conduct of the primary, Wike's treatment, and the choice of the PDP's running mate.
