Why I picked a Muslim as my running mate- Tinubu

APC Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, has given reasons why he was picked a Muslim, Kashim Shettima, as his running mate.

He announced Shettima as his running mate after paying a visit to President Buhari in Daura today, July 10.

Speaking to newsmen on why he picked the former governor of Borno as his vice presidential candidate, Tinubu said

“Senator Kasim Shettima’s career in politics and beyond shows that he is eminently qualified not only to deliver that all important electoral victory, but, also, step into the shoes of the Vice President. As a man with the talent, maturity, strength of character, and patriotism he has my implicit confidence and faith.”

On why he picked another Muslim, Tinubu said “I am aware that many will continue focus on a particular detail, the question of his faith. However, if we truly understand the challenges upon us a nation, then we must also see the imperative of placing competence in governance above religious sentiment.

Mumu Tinubu, so you're using 1993 Abiola template? Are you as Nationally accepted as Abiola was? Were there rampant killings and kidnapping of Christians in 1993 as we have today. History doesn't always repeat itself, essentially when the dynamics and realities are different.

Those shouting up and down have no plan of voting him even if he picks oyedepo or catholic pope.
The main question is what do they want him to do?.if he picks Christian, you people will come and say oh Muslim north will not vote for him,now he picks Muslim north,you are still saying Christian south won't vote for him.
One thing am sure of is that no voters will change their preference just because of a choice of running mate religion.
This is purely done under political consideration.

As for me, I'll always place competence above religion anytime, any day.
Those still crying over Muslim-Muslim ticket should rather condemn the current political settings where Nigeria's number 1,3,4 & 5 are all Moslems. This is actually far worst and dangerous than a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.

Now that the south has been successful divided along religio-tribal boundaries. The west may favour Tinubu because he is "our brother" and the east will really around Obi. In addition, fanatical Muslims in the south will not mind the Muslim- Muslim tickets, but majority of christians will sentimentally cast their vote against APC.

While, many people may consider Tinubu's choice a misfire, I think otherwise. There are several reasons but three will suffice.

First, considering Buhari's religio-ethnic bias, he will must likely be in support of a Muslim-Muslim tickets, and with all the power under his control he may influence the dynamics in favour of Tinubu. Secondly, (I just got to know about this recently) there are more Muslim than christians in Nigeria (let's not talk about, how they tend to be more united in pursuit of an objective than the christians in Nigeria- as they say, "conspiracy binds them together"), if APC are able to play their religious card well, it may work out for their good. Lastly, with the votes in the christian populated south divided, the voting of the North may tilt the numbers in Tinubu's favor.

The other side to this is that, the north can decide to rally around their own, and with only a little contribution from the south, Atiku wins.

I am most awed by the optimism being displayed by the OBI-dient group. I can't imagine that anyone in Nigeria still believe the system will accommodate what is ideal. Let's join them in prayers.

As it appears, however it turns, it is a win-win for the North. As far as they are concern, southerns and Christians have ruled the country for 16 years (they consider Umaru Musa's tenure more or less as GEJ's first time in office) and it is time for them to have their hold on power.

The general call out is for all southerns and Christians in Nigeria to learn to stay untied, "every kingdom that is divided against itself cannot stand"

I was a bit worried when many were openly condemning speculations that Tinubu wanted Muslim-muslim ticket. I said to myself 'You guys should keep quiet na, why are you trying to give your opposition a good advice?'.

It's a good thing that Tinubu didn't listen to their criticism.

Many Northern Muslims don't see Yoruba Muslims as 'real Muslims'. That's why Tinubu chose a northern Muslim as a running mate to capture the votes of northern Muslims. He has convinced himself that Yoruba people are not bothered about Muslim-muslim ticket.

Tinubu only succeeded in scoring an own goal.
