�Nigeria's bourgeoning population trends

Nigeria is one of eight countries, with a fast-rising population.

With projections that the world's population will reach, eight billion, it is imperative for Nigeria and other countries, particularly India, China, Indonesia, Tanzania, Congo and the Phillipines, with high birth rates to address this trend, in view of widespread food shortages, energy crises, hunger and climate change.

This was disclosed by the United Nations(UN) in its report, on Monday,
to mark this year's World Population Day(WPD).

The commemoration is observed on July 11, annually, to promote public awareness on population trends.

This calls for serious concern and action by this administration.

Sadly, population figures are often, seen as veritable tools, to grab more national resources.

This impunity is largely driven by sheer folly and wickedness, of political leaders, to depend on federal allocations instead of generating income from their respective states.

Efforts to tackle overpopulation is often whittled down, over religious considerations.

As a result, adults, continue to breed more children than they can cater for, thus pushing them into the streets as child beggars.

Today, Nigeria is the epicenter of poverty, out-of-school kids, terrorism and child-brides, globally.

Indisputably, Nigeria's population size is a recipe for more crises and instability, requiring urgent response.

Concerted efforts must be made to checkmate this catastrophic trend, in order to avert the humongous challenges, associated with overpopulation.
