COPYWRITING FOR BEGINNERS

Copywriting is one term that has really gained traction of late and it is becoming increasingly recognizable by the average person.

Despite this, many people still have no idea what it entails, even though they interact with Copies on a daily basis.

Some people also mistake it for 'Copyright', even though are not similar to one another in any way.

So how do we define Copywriting?

We define copywriting as a set of techniques used in writing a copy with the sole aim of persuading the reader of the copy to carry out an action that we require of them.

This action can be anything from clicking a link, signing up for a newsletter, or even making a purchase.

In case you are wondering what a 'copy' means,

A copy is simply any form of written material found in content that can be easily replicated such as advertisements, magazines, sales letters, etc.

The individual that writes a copy is referred to as a Copywriter.

A copywriter would typically draft an appropriate customer avatar (i.e. the characteristics of the type of reader the copy is targeted at) for a copy and then proceed to tailor the content of the copy to appeal to this avatar.

The Different Sections of a Copy

The sections that make up a copy vary based on the purpose of the copy and who it is being written for.

The most generic makeup of a copy typically contains these sections:

i.) The Headline: This is the most important section of a copy because it is responsible for grabbing the limited attention of the reader.

ii.) The Opening Statement: This is used to establish what the copy entails, it is responsible for retaining the attention of the user.

iii.) The Body/Main Content: This is where the major details of the copy are presented and is where most of the persuasion is carried out.

iv.) The Call to Action: This is the section of the copy where the reader is told the specific action he/she would carry out.

Types of Copywriting

The major types of Copywriting are:

i.) Direct Response Copywriting: This is a form of Copywriting that demands that the reader carries out the specified action immediately.

ii.) Email Copywriting: This type of Copywriting involves drafting emails for present or potential customers in order to get them to convert.

iii.) Social Media Copywriting: This is simply Direct Response Copywriting that is focused on converting Social Media users.

iv.) SEO Copywriting: This is the process of creating copies that are optimized for keywords that appeal to search engine algorithms.

Copywriting as a Career Path

Copywriting is widely regarded as rewarding and fulfilling career path.

The main reason for this is that it gives you greater control over your time as opposed to most other career paths where most of your waking hours are controlled by your employer.

As a copywriter, you can work for different clients all over the world from the comfort of your current physical location. All you need as a copywriter are: a laptop, internet connection, and good copywriting skills.

Copywriting can be done full-time or part-time.

So you don't necessarily need to quit your current career to become a copywriter.

It can serve as a side hustle at first, and then it might eventually end up paying you more than your main hustle since you can be earning thousands of dollars in copywriting fees depending on how good you are.

Of course, we have to clearly state that in order to become a successful copywriter, you need to be ready to dedicate adequate time and effort towards mastering it.

Getting Started as a Copywriter

Many beginner copywriters struggle unnecessarily because they don't get a proper introduction in the world of Copywriting.

What every beginner needs is a 'Copywriting Starter-Kit' that can take them from Zero in Copywriting to a level where they are ready to start learning advanced Copywriting.

This is why we have created a Copywriting Starter-Kit that was designed to help you get to this level in the quickest possible time.

Questions your sales copy must answer in the mind of your reader:

- What's in it for me?

- Why should I trust you?

- Why should I act now?

- Is it worth my time and money?

- How can I get started?

Hooks are used to hold the attention of readers by making them curious of what lies ahead in your copy.

You need to use hooks at different points of your copy, else your reader becomes bored and you lose them.

Your discovery story is basically the background story of how you discovered what you are proposing to your reader.

This type of stories are very powerful as many of your readers can relate with them.

Your unique mechanism is that 'special' thing that differentiates the product you are offering from others.

This is particularly important when the awareness level of your reader is high

They've seen it all, they've used terrible products before, so yours needs to be different.

Adding proof to your copy increases its believability tremendously.

This shows your reader that you are not bluffing or making false claims.

Testimonials and Case Studies are the most common examples of proof.

The Offer section of your copy is one of the most important sections.

If you don't do it effectively, you will lose a lot of potential customers on the spot.

Like Alex Hormozi would say, you need to make an offer so good that your reader will feel very stupid for not taking it.

When drafting your Call to Action, you need to realize that humans procrastinate a lot (even for the easiest things)

Therefore you need to include 'Scarcity', 'Urgency' & 'Guarantees' in your Call to Action to ensure that your reader is compelled to take action immediately.

An angle is simply the perspective from which you present your big idea/promise

Even if your big idea/promise is very solid, if you present it from a weak angle, your copy will flop.

A very effective method of presenting your big idea/promise is by using current events

Ideally a sales copy should have various transition points.

Transition points are used to connect the different blocks of your sales copy together,

So that the message your are passing to your reader makes sense.

Refusing to include transition points can leave your reader utterly confused.

When writing an ad copy, you need to think platform-wise.

You can't use the same tone or length you would use for an Instagram Ad for a LinkedIn or Twitter Ad.

Each social media platform has what works for it, you need to play by those rules.

A Script Copy is written for Video Sales Letters and Webinars.

Writing a Script Copy is a different ball game from writing a regular Copy that will be read by a user.

A Script Copy has to be written with visual impact and viewing experience in mind.

Since you should treat you Copywriting as a business,

You should have a separate account for receiving your Copywriting fees.

This prevents you from spending the money as it comes,

You pay yourself a salary at the end of each month and reinvest the rest into the business.

As a Copywriter,

You can strike a deal with the creator of a product or service you intend to promote to collect a certain percentage from the sales revenue generated by the Copy.

You can decide to collect a fee for your service or not.

So many ways to make money as a Copywriter.

A user can sue you because of something you wrote in your copy (mostly claims)

When writing a Copy, you need to consider the possible litigations that can arise and do your best to avoid them

Ensure you do not make absolute claims and state clearly that results are not typical

People would spend their money on what you are trying to sell to them if your Copy addresses what they do behind closed doors (their innermost desires),

As opposed to your Copy addressing what they say in the open, which is not really what they want

Your Copy should address the deepest pain your readers are facing instead of addressing their general pains

E.g.

'This drug will stop your wound from oozing a foul smell because it cannot heal'

Instead of

'This drug will cure you of your Diabetes'

Audience Insight (finding out what your target audience already know)

and

Customer Profiling (finding out what your target audience biggest fears, hopes & suspicions)

Are the two most important processes involved in carrying out Copywriting Research

Using famous people as the Sales Argument or as the Authority Positioning in your Copy always works wonders e.g

'Elon Musk said BTC is going to the moon' is more powerful than just saying 'BTC is going to the moon'
