Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, a former Presidential aspirant of the ADC and a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria – CBN, has bared his mind on political developments in the build-up to the 2023 Presidential Election. Speaking on Arise TV on Monday evening, Prof. Moghalu said he will not be participating in the 2023 Presidential Election cycle, not only because he resigned from ADC based on clear principles, but he also turned down advances to become the presidential candidate of some political parties that approached him.

Significantly, Prof. Moghalu said if he insists on contesting in 2023, then, “it might create the impression of desperation and I just didn’t want that”. He also pointed out that seeing what is already happening with Peter Obi, may lead to a division of vote. “I figured that if I come back, seeing what is already going on, then, I am coming back essentially to divide the vote for my own ambition and I chose not to,” Prof. Moghalu said.

In 2019, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu challenged the Nigerian political order, calling for a third force, while insisting that Nigerians are disempowered in their democracy, with the choice of the two traditional political establishments that cannot be trusted to deliver the kind of leadership the people want. Based on this, he was the YPP Presidential candidate in 2019.

His nationwide engagements were topnotch and elicited a lot of conversation that is part of what is shaping Peter Obi’s option of Labour Party, ahead of the 2023 Presidential Election. “We have been calling for young people to get involved, so to see that begin to happen in a very forceful way, I think it’s a good development”, Prof. Moghalu has said. Reacting to what the interviewer described as the “Peter Obi’s phenomenon”, Prof. Moghalu said that it is a good thing. “I think it’s a good thing, it’s a very valid and legitimate candidacy and movement.”

Speaking on other current political issues; for Prof. Moghalu, the ragging controversy about APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket is “a political calculation obviously designed for electoral victory, but I am not surprised by the reactions it is getting from several constituencies”. Commenting on the state of the nation, Moghalu described Nigeria as “an organized crime syndicate,” pointing out that “No less of a person than the CEO of Chevron just used a phrase like that (decrying) oil theft of at least a third of Nigeria’s oil production. Terrorists are overrunning the place, breaking prisons and shooting at the president’s convoy, with no consequence.” Prof. Moghalu said.

On the economy, Prof. Moghalu maintains that “the inflation is huge and our debt is horrible; N40 trillion Naira…its bad news and calls for a leadership of extraordinary ability and political will to protect the homeland and to transform the economy,” he affirmed.
