I have captioned this as the title of this article because this was the slogan of many Nigerians during the last general elections in Nigeria. Nigerians will keep getting the type of leaders like Goodluck Jonathan because of our shallow mindedness and gullibility. How do we explain a president who won a general election and was sworn in barely three months ago to come up with a bill (which he desires to send to the National Assembly) to elongate his tenure and that of his governors? Hear Mr President on why he is proposing tenure elongation "The envisaged Bill is part of the Jonathan administration’s transformation agenda aimed at sanitising the nation’s politics. The President believes that this single move, when actualised, will change the face of our politics and accelerate the overall development of our nation.” How is that possible? Will it remove thuggery from our politics or imposition of candidates by party leaders? How will it accelerate the development of Nigeria? Will it make power failure a thing of the past or make our roads motorable and more pleasurable to drive on or stop infrastructural decay? Does it translate to affordable qualitative education for Nigerian children or good health care services for Nigeria people? How does this address the Boko Haram phenomenon or Niger Delta militancy and other challenging security issues?
This is nothing but a self-serving bill to perpetuate himself in power. Read this “If the proposed amendment is accepted by the National Assembly, the President assures that he will not in any way be a beneficiary,". This is clearly a decoy on susceptible Nigerians. Our so called leaders know that Nigerians are very naïve and are not deep in thoughts so they fly their kite and we begin to jump over ourselves. Is there anything that will prevent Jonathan from running again in 2015? Nothing! Absolutely nothing! What happened to his party’s zoning? Is it still in force?
The earlier Nigerians get deep in thoughts and jettison these religious and tribal acrimonies that politicians employ to divide us the better. So to my friends who almost placed a curse on me because of my stand on Jonathan in the last presidential election, are you still with your man? It is clear that President Jonathan has nothing to offer Nigerians. This bill is just to distract our attention from the main challenging issues of which the President has no answers to. Whatever he says is all rhetoric. This is just the beginning more to come. Act 1 Scene 1.
