Ever since Burna Boy released a song titled ‘Odogwu‘, a lot of people have been wanting to know what it means. Well, Odogwu means “Great man warrior”. Odogwu is of Igbo origin and means “Is a title of Great man”. Also, the name Odogwu means “A man of great esteem. A distinguished man. A valorous man. A great man”. But Odogwu doesn’t only have a Nigerian origin. Zimbabweans also translate Odogwu as “MIGHTY MAN OF WAR”. It could also mean an extraordinary man. In summary, Odogwu is a title given to kings, chief, warriors, great men, heroes and men of valour. So if someone calls you Odogwu, it means you are a champion, a winner, a leader etc. 1 Like

Goodday90: Okay, I only heard odogwu when Burna boy sang it in the first song and mentioned it again in his kilometer song, "sheybi odogwu ni mi Sha". Igbos must have been saying it to themselves before hand, but it wasn't a popular nigerian slang. Sorry for diminishing it. |

Jidasem: Burna boy's mother Bose Ogulu is not Yoruba. She's Edo, from Owan. Don't let her first name deceive you. Many Edo people, for whatever reason, use Yoruba names. Her maiden name is Idonije, pure Edo name. Her mother is Yoruba though. "Yoruba speaker" makes no sense as an identifier. Almost every prominent Nigerian artiste infuses Yoruba phrases into their lyrics. It's the Lagos influence, that's all. Burna boy's first hit sef 'Tonight' had Igbo lyrics in it. Nobody dey call am "Igbo speaker" based on that. Timaya, Ijaw boy from Bayelsa, used Igbo lyrics liberally in his early works; I've never seen anybody call him "Igbo speaker" based on that.
