This is a reply to an earlier thread asking why some people dislike Big Brother Nigeria.

1. It reinforces the notion that we Nigerians/Africans like importing second hand trash from the West.
Big Brother started in Holland in 1999 and then moved to other Western Countries. Big brother is dead in the UK and USA. In both countries, viewership has declined steadily over the past 15 years. It has even been cancelled in the UK. However, it is growing steadily in Nigeria.

2. It is a reality show
Reality shows in general are problematic. The science behind these shows is not positive. First, there is a survey that shows that reality show fans are more neurotic and have less self esteem than others. Then there is the fact that "reality shows" are not real. There is also the fact that reality shows have a stronger impact on youth who are more impressionable.

3. Nigerian Big Brother is a poorer version of UK and US Big Brother
The UK and USA big brother created a lot of innovative games for its contestants/viewers. Their big brother is more strategic with people forming teams and alliances. Winners of competitions actually temporarily leave the house to watch live sporting events. They have better cash and luxury awards. They tried to improve on every season. The sets (rooms/house) for the US and UK shows are more diverse and functional.

4. It glorifies foolishness and rewards Kim Kardashian lifestyle to our youth
Studies have already shown that youths are more influenced by these reality shows. Majority of the housemates/contestants are obnoxious narcissists who should not be role models. They are just hungry for instant celebrity status. Romance, betrayal and ruthlessness are the central points of the show.

5. Big Brother Nigeria is not intellectually stimulating
Even though this post is against reality shows, there are more intellectually stimulating shows than big brother. For example, Lion's den- a reality show that contestants have to pitch a solid business idea for judges to invest in. Lion's Den will teach you about presentations and viability of business ideas. There is nothing worthwhile to learn from big brother Nigeria. It is just scripted enhanced drama.

Rather than scrapping the show, it could be improved. The competitions in the house should be educational. The winners and runner ups should visit schools. Some of the proceeds should be used in developing Nigerian youths.

There is so much more that can be done with BBN's popularity

Seun dey chop based on the show, organizers dey chop, advertisers dey chop, Don Jazzy dey chop, influencers dey chop, TV stations dey chop, politicians dey chop, musicians and record labels dey chop. I'm sure if we take a survey or study of people who watch Big Brother or Zeeworld, we will find that they are of lower IQ than the average population
