of course they do, the sector head of Camp zairo (the heart of sambisa) is a Brigadier General and of course he do lead his team to combat Boko haram. Major General Adeniyi that complained of arms to fight Boko haram under Buratai bfr he was removed also led troops

A military general goes to war but not necessarily to fight at the warfront.

He has a strategic role when it comes to tactics and his presence also doubles as a morale booster for the troops.

This is what makes them possess highly specialized skills in command, strategy, logistics, and many other things an army needs to achieve success on the battle field.

The last thing you want is an old man kicking with enlisted men when they should be coordinating the overall battle. Not only does it risk the general needlessly, it also makes the enlisted troops less effective since they’re now worried less about the mission and more about protecting the general. This is why all generals stay at their base to monitor the situation and come to the front from time to time to motivate the troops.

As for the particular rank that go, it would be brigadier Generals and Major Generals. Lieutenant Generals do not go to war.

But If the war lingers for years, and heavy casualties are being recorded, every high ranking General would be called upon to take a command including retired army Generals with vast military intelligence experience...they would be recalled back into the force to help defeat the enemy.

Superior generals may win a tactical or operational victory by overmatching an opponent in a day of battle or a campaign, but in the protracted fighting that marks major wars among modern nations and coalitions, they do not deliver strategic victory. I didn't always think that.
