QUESTION: Define each of the following terms: i. Solubility ii. Saturated solutions iii. Ions iv. Isotopes ANSWER: i. Solubility The Solubility of a solute in a solvent at a particular temperature is the maximum amount of the solute in grams or moles that will saturate 1dm3 of the solvent at that temperature. ii. Saturated Solution Saturated solution of a solute at a partivular temperature is one which contains as much solute as it can dissolve at that temperature in the presence of undissolved solute particles. iii. Ion This is any atom or group of atoms which possess an electric charge. The types of ion include: Cation Positively charged element e.g Na+, K+, Anion Negatively charged elements e.g Cl-, Br- iv. Isotopes These are atoms of an element that possess the same Atomic Number (Proton Number) but different Mass Number (Atomic Mass). Note that difference in Mass Number is due to differences in Neutron number. Elements which undergo isotopy are: Hydrogen, Oxygen, Carbon, Chlorine.
