National Security coordinator John Kirby said that the US is clear about its One China policy and does not support "Taiwan independence"

"We are clear that nothing has changed about our one China policy which is guided by Taiwan Relations Act. We do not support Taiwan's independence," Kirby said while addressing a media briefing.

"We expect to see China use inflammatory rhetoric and disinformation in the coming days," Kirby added.

He said that the administration of US President Joe Biden has "been nothing but clear with the Chinese about where we stand on the issues and the One China policy and our support for a free and open Indo-Pacific."

The problem between China and Taiwan is not independence but who is the legitimate representative of the people of China.

The former rulers of China ran to the island during and after the war and formed a government in Taiwan.

So many people are not in the know of what transpired. The people of mainland China and the people living on the island are the same people with a legitimate claim but the resolution by some countries especially the Jimmy Carter government to recognise the Communist Party as the legitimate government of China never delegitimize the existence of the government of Taiwan and their right to self government.
