IYD 2022: “Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages”


The theme for this year's International Youth Day (IYD) 2022 couldn't have been more succinct, especially at this time in Nigeria where the clamour for change and inclusivity echoes across all strata of the Nigerian populace.

Also, it is an obvious reality that the issue of ageism and intergenerational conflicts has become a major and hard to ignore phenomenon. Thus, it is pertinent that rather than fold our hands and watch as the gulf widens, we should rather begin to see how we can address these issues and make the most of it for the growth and upliftment of all Nigerians.

The ATIKU YOUTH WING marks this year's International Youth day by calling on all and sundry to synergize both human and material resources towards delivering a change in governance and systemic administration which will catapult our nation Nigeria back to her pride of place in not just Africa, but the world at large.

Through the aspiration of our principal, His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, we are reminded of the symbiosis that is very important between generations as we have never had a candidate of his generation whose aspiration is solely based on tapping the energetic and youthful human resource of the younger generation and personally sees to the mentoring and preparation of the youth population towards effective leadership and governance of the nation.

His promise of a 40% youth inclusion in all aspect of governance and decision making has been proven to not just be a Trojan promise, but a promise well built into concrete plans and proposed initiatives to ensure a 100% delivery. This goes further to prove that an Atiku Abubakar presidency will not just play lip service to the issues of youth inclusion, growth and advancement, it will make it a reality rather than a farce as we have hitherto had it with current and previous administrations.

Indeed, the agitation for a more youthful presidency and governance is very germane to the healthy and developmental well being of Nigeria given the present realities. However, a synergy between the older, yet competent and sharp minded generation as represented by Atiku Abubakar is a very much needed course to embark in order to actualize the vision of a youthful presidency and youth centric economic and social policies.

The ATIKU YOUTH WING calls on all well meaning Nigerians today, to think more on collaboration and solidarity amongst generations towards a Unified, Secure and Prosperous Nigeria by entrenching systems and policies that not only listen to young people, but also integrate and put mechanisms in place to ensure their full involvement in the decision making for the growth and advancement of our dear country Nigeria.

Also, we urge that systems be put in place that ensure social protection and opportunities for the older generation which enable them give back to our society through their long accumulated wealth of experience in nation building.

The world and our country Nigeria is currently faced with myriads of socioeconomic challenges, at this point in our existence; both as young and old, all hands need to work together and map out a path towards overcoming these daunting challenges and put us on a course of socioeconomic revitalization. We cannot afford to leave anyone behind at this time. We must all work together across generational barriers to achieve a world that is JUST, EQUITABLE and INCLUSIVE for all.
