South Africa Women’s Team To Be Paid Equally As Their Men

South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Art and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, and the country’s football association president, Danny Jordaan, both confirmed that the women’s team (Banyana Banyana) will be paid equally as the men’s team (Bafana Bafana).

In a historic move for women’s football in South Africa, Banyana Banyana will now receive the same base salary as their male counterparts.

Banyana Banyana received a hero’s welcome when they arrived in South Africa with the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations trophy on Tuesday. They won their first title last Saturday, defeating Morocco in a tense final in Rabat.

“It is going to be a law in this country that Banyana Banyana and Bafana Bafana will be paid equally,” Nathi Mthethwa announced.

“We are making that decision as the government. It’s not only Banyana Banyana but all the women’s teams [to be paid equally], we are supporting them as government.

“We’ve said to SAFA that when we give SAFA money they need to put a sum aside for women in general.”

Jordaan also confirmed that the football body will follow a trend occurring throughout the women’s game.

“On the African continent, Sierra Leone became the first African country to pay women and men the same, after an agreement between the government and the Sierra Leone football [association]. Brazil now is paying men and women equal. Norway has followed that route, England has gone that route and it’s time South Africa follows that route,” Jordaan said.
