SmartPolician:The same subsidized education trained doctors and engineers that the West are courting like their life depend on it. What ASUU man is saying is that dont vote anybody who doesn't have your interest at heart. The current president of Kenya had all his education up to PhD level in Kenya, the biggest farm in Kenya, he signed up to give farmers 250b as capital. If you are not a beneficiary of a system you cannot be a stakeholder. Good luck gave ASUU 200 billion because he was a lecturer himself. |

jesmond3945: Unless we want to keep deceiving ourselves like we always do, we already know that those who study STEM in Nigeria are terribly ill-equipped. I know what I am writing because I have been there, done that. The doctors you mentioned are even made to take series of exams and undergo further training before they are absorbed in those countries, chiefly US and Europe. On the flip side, do we train American and European doctors in Nigeria when they come here to work? Do we ask them to do exams? Your guess is as good as mine. The truth is, university education is not cheap anywhere in the world. However, I won't repeat what I have already written. IMO, the best government can do is partly pay students' fees because student loans cannot work in Nigeria. It becomes a PPP arrangement. When they pay 50% of your fees, you take care of the rest. If you cannot afford it, you don't bother attending it. Public universities should be run like private universities with 50% school fees payment made by the government. It's high time we decided what we want - quality or quantity. 2 Likes |

SmartPolician:That Is what ASUU are fighting for. So that STEM courses would be properly equipped. The PPP is the same model in naija. Government pay part of your fees while you pay the rest. Is the same model. Every major country subside education for their citizens, UK, US, name it. Subsidy and loans is to make education accessible to all |

jesmond3945: Nah. University education can never be accessible to all. It's not possible. Those countries you mentioned have high requirements for gaining admission into varsities, especially the Ivy League schools. Besides, they have good high school certificates that help them secure jobs when they leave school - this, my friend, is partly my point. This is why many of them don't bother furthering their education. Back in Nigeria, people even do MSc just to get a decent job. In short, imagine when a student of federal university pays 50k in school fees and thinks it's okay. 50k is less than $90 per annum. This is preposterous! Go and check what undergrads pay elsewhere in the world. Some of them pay as high as $10k per annum. Beta soup na money kill am. My point is, secondary school should be well-equipped to enable people get a job or become self-employed the moment they finish from there without bothering to further their education. Our federal universities are wholly owned by the government now. It shouldn't be so. If you truly make public universities a PPP arrangement, fees can increase to N200k - N400k. Government will pay half while the students pay half. Everything else will be paid by the students. This way, universities will have more funds for training their lecturers, carrying out research studies, infrastructural development, etc. 1 Like |

Obi spent years abroad, family abroad, but he has several business in the country. Impacting positively in d economic growth of d country. Obi is a true son. Most governors een dia tenure elapses...run abroad to hide, but he neva did so. He has no stain to run away from. A man of integrity. |

I am still looking for a government that will bring out a constitutional law or a constitution into law that will prohibit anybody that is willing to rule this nation 2 avoid their children from schooling in abroad that is anybody whose children are schooling outside our country has no right to contest for any political office in Nigeria |

Even most vive chancellors now send their children abroad ASUU members are also corrupt All those sex for marks or sorting are done by politicians? MDK777: RUBBISH!!! Punish children because of the sins of their fathers? Moreover, some of their children can be brilliant enough to gain admission abroad without their father's influence. Punish the politicians by not voting corrupt ones to power. |
