Download "PHP 5 for Dummies".

Do not learn any thing from w3schools! Just use it for references. Its horrible.

For understading PHP much try and download PHP manual for quick reference and some books

as a total novice, it could be quite difficult to start without any assistance. maybe u can get a developer around to put u thru the fundamentals .
