My brother's friend gifted me a laptop before he left Nigeria.
HP Compaq 530 and its operating system is Windows Vista. It has no battery, he said I should buy a new battery.
I made research about it, I deduced that its an old model and some browsers do not accept this operating system again.
It is too slow, its not playing some movies and few that its playing are even skipping.

I don't know anything about laptops and I don't know any I.T person that can put me through.
When I put it on on Saturday, it was too slow to response, it took like 6 minutes before I could access Microsoft Office on the system and right now its not even booting.
I was thinking of formatting it.

Pls N/landers can I use it for my school activities?
What are the things that ought to be done in the system?

You will have to unistall so many apps. Go to countrol panel then unistall apps.

Then also, remove so many startup apps.

search for "run" and type "msconfig" go to startup tab or you can even go to task manager and disable the unuseful applications.

Finally also go to search for "run" and type "msconfig" and uncheck normal or diagnostic startup. Just click selective startup and uncheck load system services and also startup items.

Keep on managing it until you can afford a new one, Goodluck!

Hmmm.....there could be a number of factors causing the laptop to be so slow;
1. Old age: All machines are prone to wear and tear.....with windows vista installed as the OS, it's proof that that laptop go don pass 7-10years. So If you have some monies to spare - It could be that your harddrive is gradually failing, you may have a temporary fix of formatting the system and installing just the basic files (MS Office, PDF reader, Chrome and a few Utility Apps). Get an external drive to save your movies so the system get breathing space.

2. Hard drive don almost full - less than 15% total capacity. Back up your files (You can create a partition - using Disk management "Shrink Volume" - You can literally get videos on youtube on how to fix it tho. But I don't think you should take the temptation of using Windows 10 on that pc with the spec i read online; jejely dey Manage Windows 7 Home.

listen for hard disk noise. If absent, format and clean install.

Dont bother buying a battery if cost of battery and SSD upgrade has more value than the laptop.
