Condoms create a barrier that stops HIV from touching and entering your body during sex. They can prevent HIV during all kinds of sex – vaginal, anal, oral and when using intimacy gadgets. When used correctly, condoms are the best option to prevent HIV.They have a very low failure rate.

Here are some basic things you can do to make sure you're using a condom properly:

1) Use a new condom each time you have sex.
2) Put the condom on as soon as an erection occurs and before any sexual contact (whether vaginal, anal or oral).
3) Avoid using an oil-based lubricant, such as Vaseline or baby oil, which can weaken the condom and increase the chances of it splitting – water-based lubricants are best and can be bought at most supermarkets or pharmacies.
4) The person wearing the condom should withdraw from their partner immediately after ejaculating, holding the condom firmly to keep it from slipping off.
