It is no Longer news that Nigeria and Africa’s Riqchest man with a Net Worth of 10.1 Billion dollars according to Forbes is constructing an integrated refinery and Petrochemical complex in Lekki Free Trade in Lagos Nigeria. But there are some amazing facts you never knew about this refinery and its estimated socio-Economic impact in Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole when it is completed. Below are some of the amazing facts you need to know about Dangote Refinery.

Dangote Refinery is the 6th Largest Refinery in the world/ It is Behind Jamnagar Refinery in India which is the Largest in the world, Ulsan Refinery, Paraguana Refinery, Gs Caltex Yeosu and S-oil Onsan Refinery. the Largest refinery in Africa and Nigeria respectively:


Dangote Refinery is the Largest Refinery in Nigeria: Having occupied the position of 6th Largest Refinery in the world, Dangote Refinery is the Largest Refinery in Nigeria.


Dangote Refinery is slated to cost the sum of 14 billion dollars that is about 5 trillion naira of which Dangote will contribute 7 Billion dollars in equity. The United States Trade and Development Agency is offering a N 251.3 Bn training grant to develop human resources for operating the refinery.


A consortium of Local and international Banks Led by Chartered Bank is providing $3.3 This is up to Nigeria’s annual budget and a budget of about 15 African countries in a year.


Dangote refinery will generate about 15,000 megawatts of electricity.

Dangote Refinery will take 20,000 Direct workers and create jobs for about 50,000 indirect workers.


Dangote Refinery sits on about 3000 hectares of Land in Ibeju-Lekki: The Refinery is massive and occupies about 3000 hectares of Land in Lekki Free Trade Zone near Lekki Lagoon.


Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical company is expected to produce Euro V Quality Gasoline, diesel and other Petrochemical products.


Dangote Refinery is going to open up thousands of business Opportunities and catalyse heavy commercial activities in Ibeju-Lekki Axis:Apart from fuels and PMS, Dangote refinery is also expected to produce many Petrochemical products such as; aviation fuels, polypropylene, plastics.


Dangote Refinery will increase Nigeria’s crude oil refining capacity: it is estimated that Nigeria has about 37 Billion crude oil reserves which is the second biggest in Africa and at the same time spend about 4 billion naira to import fuel annually to meet up with the high demand of fuel locally. With this Nigeria ought to be a Major exporter of refined crude oil products, but this dream is hazy because of our inability to refine crude oil locally. With the coming of Dangote refinery Nigeria is expected to not only have enough for domestic consumption but also export these products.


A Deep Sea port is Constructed 10 Minutes’ drive from Dangote Refinery: In order to make shipping of these refined crude oil products to the international market, the Lagos State Government in partnership with Tolaram Group, and Nigeria Ports Authority is currently constructing the first deep sea port in Nigeria.


Dangote Refinery will feature Infrastructure facilities such as pipeline system, access roads, tanks storage facilities and crude oil product handling facilities.


There is also a Marine Terminal, including a breakwater, jetty and harbour located close to the Lekki Deep Sea Port.


Dangote Refinery will also include a Fertiliser Plant which will supposedly become the Largest fertiliser plant in Nigeria. The Fertiliser Plant is going to use the bye products from the refinery as raw materials. The Fertiliser Plant is expected to produce 2.8 million metric tonnes of Fertiliser per annum.




When it commences operation, Dangote Refinery is expected to have a daily production of 650,000 barrels of petroleum products per day, it will also have an annual refining capacity of 10.4 million tonnes of gasoline, about 4.7 mt of diesel and about 4.5 mt of jet fuel. Other products include; 0.6mt of polypropylene, 0.25mt of propane, 32,000 tonnes of sulphur and 0.5 mt of Carbon black feed.

 

Dangote Refinery will process about 1.3 million metric tonnes of petrochemical products annually. This is according to Mansur Alhmed, the Executive Director of Dangote Group.

Dangote Refinery will have the Largest Subsea Pipeline Infrastructure in the world with a carrying capacity of about 4 million cubic metres of oil per annum.




With Dangote Refinery, it is a goodbye to fuel Shortage in Nigeria: In the past Nigerians have suffered a series of fuel shortages due to the inability of our indigenous Government owned refinery to function effectively and meet up the high demand of fuel in the country. However, the arrival of Dangote refinery will now make Nigeria an exporter of fuel in the international market.


Finally Dangote Refinery is expected to save Nigeria a whooping sum of 7.5 billion dollars annually in foreign exchange being used to import petroleum products and also generate 5 billion dollars foreign exchange earnings annually.
