I lost wife, N900,000 pension, others to gas explosion – Septuagenarian

A retired soldier, Pa Saula Ajayi, 76, lost his 70-year-old wife, and valuables, including cash and vital documents, to a fire triggered by a gas explosion in the Ijela area of Abeokuta, Ogun State. The septuagenarian tells DAUD OLATUNJI about the tragic incident and his loss

What is your name, age and what do you do for a living?

I am Saula Ajayi. I am 76 years old; I was born in 1946. I am a retired soldier.

Are you the owner of the building that got burnt following a recent gas explosion in the Ijela area of Abeokuta, Ogun Stat?
No. I am a tenant in the house. I rented three rooms in the house. It is a storey building.

How did the incident happen?

I went to the bank to collect my pension, N500,000. When I got back home I dropped the money on my bed and went to the bathroom. It was while I was in the bathroom that I heard people shouting that the house was on fire. I rushed out of the bathroom naked
Were you the only one at home?

No, I was not the only one at home; my wife was downstairs washing clothes when the incident happened. On hearing the shout by neighbours that our house was on fire, I rushed out of the bathroom naked.

How were you able to make it out of the house?

It was my neighbours that came to rescue me.

Is it true that you lost your wife to the incident?

Yes, she died of shock. She fainted out of shock following the explosion. She was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment but she died four days after in the hospital.

We were told the following day that her health wasn’t improving, so we had to move her, while she had been placed on oxygen, to Lantoro where we learnt that her condition had deteriorated and we were told that she would have to go through a CT scan, which wasn’t available in Abeokuta. We were referred to the Ogun State Teaching Hospital, Olabisi Onabanjo at Sagamu and on getting there, we were unattended as they claimed that the doctor that would attend to her was not on seat. Again, we were redirected to the Federal Medical Centre from Saturday till the moment she died on Monday. All the effort put into saving her life proved abortive.
Did she have an underlying ailment before the incident?

Not at all; we were both strong and healthy.

What is her name and how old was she?

Her name is Elizabeth Ajayi; she was 70 years old

Did you lose any property?

I lost a lot of things to the fire. I lost all my documents that I collected in the Army; all my properties that I acquired all my life have gone. My pension of over N850,000 was lost to the fire incident. You said you had some cash in the house, which also got burnt
Yes.

How much was the money?

The money is so much, I went to collect N500,000 from the bank and I had about N400,000 at home. Everything is almost a million naira. It is my pension from the Army.
Burnt cash
What did you plan to do with the money?

I wanted to use it to complete my house, which is under construction at Oke Ata (Ogun State).

How exactly do you feel about this tragic incident?

I feel bad and devastatedDo you have children?

Yes, I have nine children.

Where do you live now?

I stay with my friend.

For how long had you been living in the house that got burnt?

Up to four years now.

Where did you serve during your time in the Army?I served in Sokoto from 1967 to 1990.

Have you informed the Army about the incident?

I am yet to inform the Army. I am not even sure of how to go about that because even all my documents that will prove that I was truly once a member of the force are gone. In fact, the documents I need for my pension are all gone and without those documents, I won’t be able to collect my pension.

What kind of assistance do you need now?

I want people to assist me in any way they can because all my retirement documents were burnt and I won’t have access to my pension again. I don’t have anything again. All my properties are gone with the fire. I also need the government to help me in terms of my pension.

Sorry baba.

This is pathetic I must confess!
It can happen to anyone sincerely.

Lesson learnt:
What could have made this Baba not to have built his house long before now, because I was sure the economy was far better during his days?

To guess...
1. Large family expenses.
2. Another could be lack of financial discipline.
3. Many girl friends (soldiers and women).
4. Waiting on his pension to cater for his old age.
5. Married late...his children should have also built this house as an alternate choice.
6. Wrong forecaste of the future.

Advice:
I am using this opportunity to beg every young man out there especially those in their late 30's and 40's to work towards solving their housing needs as early as possible.
Whether u like it or not, everyone must get old or even die young but those family members u leave behind matters also.

Let us all learn from this old man's life...it may be that this man depended on his pension to build this house but he was not paid as at when due.

Pls,find a side hustle that is legitimate and right before the law and do.

Thanks.

In as much I sympathize with Baba over the loss of his beloved wife. I can not help but identify some loopholes at the end of his story.

The army has records of all retired personnel. If his documents were burnt, the duplicates can be retrieved through the Army Pensions Board especially since they have paid him some money before.

Secondly, pension of N500,000? Did he retire as a Brig. General? How many months of accrued pension of a junior army officer will amount to N500,000? (Please note that he said he still has more with government).

Okay, let's assume he's a senior officer. How many senior officers retire from the army into a rented apartment?

Anyways, what do I know?
He still needs as much financial assistance from well-meaning Nigerians regardless. May the soul of mama rest in perfect peace and may God grant papa the fortitude to bear the loss.
