Anovulation ( not ovulating) is one of the common reasons of infertility. Normally, one of the ovaries releases a single mature egg every month, and this is called ovulation. Egg maturation and ovulation is stimulated by two hormones secreted by the pituitary - follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) . These two hormones must be produced in appropriate amounts throughout the monthly cycle for normal ovulation to occur. Every month, at the start of the menstrual cycle, in response to the FSH produced by the pituitary gland, about 30-40 primordial follicles start to grow. Of these, only one matures to form a large fluid-filled structure, called a Graafian follicle which contains a mature egg, while the others die ( a process called atresia). The mature egg is released from the follicle when the follicle ruptures in response to a surge of LH produced by the pituitary. After ovulation has occured, the follicle from which the egg has been released forms a cystic structure called the corpus luteum. This is responsible for progesterone production in the second half of the cycle. Most women who have regular periods have ovulatory cycles. Women who fail to ovulate or who have abnormal ovulation usually have a disturbance of their menstrual pattern. This may take the form of complete lack of periods (amenorrhoea), irregular or delayed periods (oligomenorrhoea) or occasionally a shortened cycle due to a defect in the second part (luteal phase) of the cycle. |

Abnormal ovulation Abnormalities of ovulation ( anovulation) may appear in several ways. Menstrual cycles shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days are often associated with anovulation. In addition, patients may skip menstrual periods for time intervals of three months or more and this is called oligomenorrhea (infrequent periods) . If the periods stop entirely, this is called amenorrhea. Many hormonal systems work together to produce regular menstrual periods, and the blood levels of the hormones that make up these systems need to be tested in order to determine the reason for the ovulatory disorders. The hormone blood tests, which are usually done on the third day of your cycle, test for the levels of the following key reproductive hormones : The FSH level: The FSH level gives a good idea of the number of eggs remaining in the ovaries. A high FSH level suggests that the ovary has either failed or has started to fail. If the FSH level is very high (in the menopausal range) then the diagnosis is ovarian failure. If the level is borderline, then some doctors will do a clomiphene stimulated FSH level, which allows for an earlier diagnosis of failing ovaries. On the other hand, a low FSH level suggests hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. This seemingly verbose term simply means that the ovary in these patients is not working properly because of inadequate production of FSH by the pituitary gland. However, in most anovulatory patients, the FSH level will be in the normal range, and this can be reassuring. The LH level: This is the other gonadotropin hormone produced by the pituitary; and provides much the same information as the FSH level does. Another useful test is the LH:FSH ratio which is normally 1:1. If, however, the LH level is much higher than the FSH level, this suggests a diagnosis of polycystic ovarian disease. Thyroxine and TSH: These tests for thyroid function. The thyroxine level is high in patients with overactive thyroid glands (hyperthyroidism). In patients with decreased thyroid function (hypothyroidism), the TSH level is increased. Prolactin: Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that induces lactation or milk formation, High prolactin levels (hyperprolactinemia) can interfere with ovulation . A milky discharge from the breast nipple , not related to pregnancy or nursing , is called galactorrhea, and this is a telltale symptom of high prolactin levels and needs to be investigated. If the prolactin level is elevated, the doctor will need to recheck it to confirm it is persistently high. There are many reasons for an elevated prolactin level, including certain drugs as well as stress. In some women, the reason for a high prolactin level can be a small tumour in the pituitary gland. This is called a prolactinoma or microadenoma, and the doctor may advise you have an X-ray of the skull ( or even a CT scan or MRI scan) to rule out this possibility. However, most infertile women with hyperprolactinemia can be easily treated.l: The FSH level gives a good idea of the number of eggs remaining in the ovaries. udoka2:I would like to discuss with you privately. You can chat with me or call me.You need to be proactive in dealing with this and a 37 day circle might have more to it. I'm not insinuating any thing i'm just saying dont leave anything to chance. |

I want to share my experience of my encounter with Dr. Haastrup. Am not saying authentically that he is scam but am pointing towards that direction. I have been TTC for 11 months and am a silent reader of Arlington's tread (TTC). Dr. Haastrup came on board and I got impressed with his level of information and his st. nicholas email addy. I decided to give him a call. I read my hormone profile result to him, and he told me outrightly that my biological age was ticking and I should act fast. I panicked and agreed to meet him up at luth. Not knowing my way there, he agreed to pick me up at Obalende, he was really nice and I was impressed with his kind gestures. Alarm bell started ringing when he was overly nice, waited for me infront of Oceanic bank and called me numerous times. I picked him, and I commented on how nice he was, and gave me some tales on how it's just his nature. We got to luth and I was expecting us to go to his office, but alas he took me to some dingy doctor's hostel. I told him, I was uncomfortable but he sweet talked me out of it. Every being in me wanted to turn back and go home, but as a despereate woman I said, this might be my messiah, why not give hime a trial. He had a back pack, and looked nothing like a medical doctor. He brough out a plastic bag and took my blood sample. It was so unprofessionally done and he puntured my hand, 3 times before he could get a blood sample. He said he wld treat me with pregnyl as it was more potent than clomid. He injected me with the mixture.(He collected N28,000 for pregnyl and N20,000 for consultation). He offered to show me a shorter route home on the agreement that I would pay for his taxi back home. We spoke a lot on the drive home, and he told me he works in Chevron's clinic and lives on the island. He also mentioned about some courses he took in canada. I commended his long articles and he said, oh it was easy for him to write since he types directly from his head! Well, I went on to the internet, and was shocked to realise that Pregnly was a stimulant used to induce final stage of follicle development.Usually admistered right before ovulation. Ovulation takes place within 48 hrs of the Injection,.Our dear Dr. Haastrup administered his to me on day 3 of my cycle while I was still on my period. I told him my fears, and he said hit does not matter that different different, different times of administration. Only for him to tell me again today that he would have to repeat the dose just before my ovluation! I further went on to the interent to get more information and I was shocked to see that most of the articles he posted on his tread were directly lifted from a fertility clinic in india. www.drmalpani.com. Oh my God is there a motive to this, ? Every knowlwdge i share here are knowlwdge i've gotten over time through training and a lot of study and patients exposure. I'm so shocked, and the said person i had contact with saw me in the midst of fellow doctors and she asked questions and it was clarified to her. Just because i made adjustment to her rewatment based on the result of her test she labelled me a scam or is it because of my looks or the fact that i shared knowledge and it happwns to coincide with another drs knowledge, its sad, so sad. |
Re: Fertility And Issues With Conception? Get Your Answers Here. by mogbomoya: 2:55pm On Aug 16, 2011 |
Dr. Haastrup, It is not a case of knowledge coincidence,it is a clear case of copy & paste from the site. Please pple have the time to go thru the articles on that website. You specifically told me that you typed everything off your head! My motive is just to warn pple that you are not as experienced in fertility treatment as you claim to be unless you can prove it otherwise. |

I'm short of words, just that am a bit careful cos I'm somehow suspicious about the DR. My husband called him sometimes ago and his readiness to come down to our place is something I can't comprehend, he did all the calling prior to the day of appointment to the extent that my husband too wasn't comfortable and had to call off the meeting. Dear DR (that's if u are one), integrity, honesty and openness should be your watch word. Y lifting docs from another site verbatim and you claimed you composed them off hand (I just checked the site and it was lifted word for word), this is not ideal. Like ARLINGTON said, don't let us be too desperate, rely on GOD and wait for your time. I rest my case |
Re: Fertility And Issues With Conception? Get Your Answers Here. by mogbomoya: 3:22pm On Aug 16, 2011 |
@ITSURS Thank you for speaking up also. The good lord would give us a testimony soon. I soo wish I heeded to my husband's instruction, he told me to sit at home and not to go for any appointment. I had accepted already, until Dr. Haastrup called my phone. I read out the hormonal result I took months back, and he immediately told me my biological age was ticking and I should act fast. It is well, am not even going to worry about my inability to conceive immediately. I know he would answer me very very soon. My hubby and fruitful as the word of God has declared. |

Ladi mogbomoya: ALL LADIES, Even when ur hubby idea or suggestions seems dumb in any situations provided its not VERY Urgent or life threating, make your stand known to him CLEARLY , then pray and be patient ( obey his suggestion), It would save you alot of issue in the long run, and He would later relaise his mistakes!! |

oduamine Thanks for your response, but I must say that was a very harsh welcome from you, i don't want to believe that's what this site is about. I have gone through this site many times and am sorry if i stork the wrong cord in my topic. I went through hell emotionally and physically before my gift came. believe me am no novice, i have done all the tests you can imagine, so has my hussy. so don't think am just posting for fun. I am a christian and the word of God saw me through the tough times, the many nights of weeping. so my dear when i say twin4me its by faith. The same that brought me my gift. I am desperate yes but not in the hands of man but God, and like the woman in the bile with and issue of blood, i hold on to the hem of his garment till he gives me my gift, as he will do for everyone in this thread. Amen! |

@ Twins4me, there is a thread called Trying To Conceive TTC. It will help u better than this useless thread with a fake doctor. https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-318334.0.html#msg4468862 I don't think Oduamine meant to give u a harsh welcome. God will answer ur prayer. |

blank: That will be a welcome development but don't be too surprised if he comes up with a new id. I always wondered how a doctor will have time to play 20 questions and be online always, its rather unfortunate that an individual will go through the TTC thread and decide to play doctor at the risk of a fellow human being health, emotions et al. |
