Monkeypox is a viral infection caused by a poxvirus called Variola major. People caught it by being bitten or scratched by monkeys or apes, or by handling tools or clothes that were contaminated by such animals. Unlike smallpox, which was eradicated in 1980, monkeypox remains prevalent in parts of central and western Africa, particularly Nigeria.

In humans, it causes a severe illness characterized by fever, headache, backache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cough and rash. Most people recover within 2 weeks; however, complications may include pneumonia, encephalitis, blindness and death.

Monkeypox is a contagious viral disease that can occur both in humans and other animals. Its symptoms include fever, swollen lymph glands, and a skin rash that develops into hard, dry sores. The incubation period lasts between 5–21 days. The disease can be fatal if left untreated.
