Babatunde Fashola, minister of works and housing, says politicians can win elections without “exaggerating” the nation’s problems.

Fashola said this on Thursday while delivering a keynote address at TheNiche annual lecture, with the theme ‘2023 Elections and the Future of Nigeria’s Democracy’ in Lagos. The minister said rather than exploit the country’s challenges, politicians can highlight its prospects.

“We can win elections without exaggerating our problems. We can do so by offering credible service and well thought out solutions,”

We can win elections without disrobing our country before the global community. We can do so by valorising Nigeria’s possibilities and not by widening her fault lines

“Elections and democracy must represent for us, a feast of ideas and choices that bring out the best of us and the best of our country.”

Speaking further, he said Nigerians should focus on how democracy can make lives better. Given that we are 20 days to the formal commencement of campaigns for the 2023 general election, the 2022 annual lecture coming 170 days to the first of the elections in February 2023 provided a potential platform for many possibilities,” he said.

“Democracy does not guarantee that the leader or those leaders will deliver or indeed are able to deliver on what we want.

“Put conversely, what really is it that we expect from those we elect and what do they promise to do before we vote, and what have they done for us? Did we vote for, or did we collect tricycles, sewing machines, generators, etc. from them?

“If we did, can we legitimately expect that the budget from which these things were procured will also provide healthcare, drugs and diagnostic equipment in our health facilities?”

Then it was "to provide 24 hours electricity is not rocket science" and then "vote out Jonathan and PDP to get steady electricity", but today the story has changed.

Now that Fashola and his cohorts in the APC know that lies and propaganda can't help their course any more, he has resort to the need for politicians to objectively rationalise issues.Thunder fire you.

We need to let the world know our problem.
Campaign starts from identifying the problem of the nation, and you analyse your strategy towards solving the problem.
Nothing to hide.
It shouldn't get worst than this

Pre-2015 they were not thinking this way. They not only denigrate their president, his office and family, but also the country. They wrote letters to the US not to sell weapons to the then government. Today they went to same US to buy Tuscano jets to fight their own BH.

This is same Fashola that exaggerated Nigeria problems 200 times during GEJ administration. Thesame Fashola is telling Nigerians not to do same things he did to kick out GEJ og power. Can he show us where he highlighted good things about GEJ govt to International Community from 2011-2015?

“Elections and democracy must represent for us, a feast of ideas and choices that bring out the best of us and the best of our country.”
Quote by the Great Honourable Babatunde Raji Fashola.

I always start by making my bias very clear,I will vote Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President of Nigeria in February 2023 and by the grace of the Almighty Jesus he will be sworn in as president elect in May 2023.
The great ex-chief of staff,ex-Gov and soon to be ex-Minister has spoken the mind of many sensible Nigerians.
We will force these presidential candidates to talk about issues affecting Nigeria,l keep saying the President Jonathan supporters that have transitioned to Obi supporters haven't learnt their lessons.
In the run-up to the 2015 election, instead of focusing on Baba Buhari economic deficiency, they kept on talking about Baba Buhari being an islamist,a certificate-less soldier and piling insults on him, alas Baba Buhari was able to get through the insult and became president.
They have started again with the insults on Asiwaju, instead of Allowing Nigerians hear the policies of H.E Atiku and Asiwaju, they want the campaign to descend to insults again,8 years after allowing Baba Buhari win the election devoid of economic policies.
In 2022,we will force the candidates to give us economic blueprint on how they will end ASUU strike, end fuel Subsidy, increase the revenue generation of the country, secure the country, fix electricity challenges and so many problems.
I repeat we will force all the candidates to give us their blueprint that we will them accountable for after 4 years.
God bless Nigeria.

To Politicians, exaggeration is the name of the game, if there are no lies, how else would the politician grow in fame. For he strives to tell you a tale or at most two, and sway you along with his lies and money too.

The art of politics is nothing but a game, a game of deceit of how many you can shame or tame. So to you the voter i say be wise, or else you ill carried away by his caprices and vice. And if by chance the evil politician have his way, then i wish you as much as you wish yourself for there is nothing else for me to say.

Is it even possible to exaggerate Nigeria's problems? You must be living in cuckoo land with your head buried in the sand if you think people are exaggerating Nigeria's problems.

Lol...

You chaps should have thought about that in the build up to the 2015 general elections.

You introduced a very dangerous trend in Nigerian electoral politics & now, you are scared to face the repercussions...

Fashola should hide his head in shame.

I thought he said 24hrs power supply is not rocket science.

After using all manner or propaganda to win election in 2015, you still have the guts to talk.

I think Nigeria's problem under this Govt is even underrated.
