Yeah, the City was rehabilitated that way by the then workaholic Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Donald John Duke. He tried to modernize Calabar to give it a face lift for a befitting State Capital of Cross River State, while maintaining some of it ancient ambience.
The city was first discovered by the Portuguese Slave merchants who sailed to shores & called it Cala Berra, before the British took over, then the arrival of Scottish Missionaries who brought Presbyterian Church &Western Education.
The Slave Trade Harbour &Point-of-no-Return still exist till today but has been renamed Marina Resort by Mr. Donald Duke. It's a place you can hangout with friends & have the view of Calabar River.

Ikeja, Port Harcourt, Uyo, Kano, Enugu, Kaduna, Ibadan if I see Benin here again eh that slimy slum with red earth and medieval buildings everywhere. Truly ancient.

Besides Port Harcourt & Rivers State have been in existence before the creation of Akwa Ibom State in 1987 &Uyo becoming the State Capital in the process.

Going by the way they hype Peter Obi here, you'd have expected Awka to be paradise as he was governor for 8 good years but it's all empty noise unfortunately.

Akwa is young, but currently it has better buildings and infrastructure than even almighty Ibadan. It take more than 8 years for cities to be very developed. Obi set in the right motion, now Awka is growing rapidly.

Onitsha is more developed than Awka and that is because it has been developing before Awka. Awka is just 30 years old. Wait fex make e reach atleast 50 before you compare am with state wey don dey exist since the last 70/50 years
