Hello all. Am not from Nigeria but I love Nigerian music and tradition. Especially the afrobeat movement started by Fela Kuti. However, nowadays I see alot of musicians from all over Africa saying they do afrobeat yet their music is very far from what Fela coined Afrobeat. Its just some computerized pop beats and they call it afrobeat. Take a look at this interesting blog article from Uganda about Musicians there who call themselves Afrobeat musicians.

I want to know your thoughts. Is Afrobeat the music of Fela, Femi, Sunny e.t.c or is it any music done in Africa?

Its not any music done in africa,
some artists like mosdef has sampled afrobeat songs, that doesnt make their songs afrobeat.

the fela/femi type songs are afrobeat.

am not sure if lagbaja type music belongs to that category though.

@ambros: Yea thanks for the reply. That blog article is actually a write up about Ugandan musicians who keep calling themselves afrobeat musicians. I also agree with your overall view. Afrobeat is a specific style of music.

@xalixo,thanks 4 beign interested in Nigerian music.we as naija producers & artistes appreciate ur audience, well regarding ur question, the term 'afrobeat' was created by the late great Fela Anikulapo Kuti(R.I.P) but his type of sound originated 4rm the american jazz music of the 40's & 50's.there are so many similarities b.w them, most notably d use of the saxophones, rythmic drum patterns and soulful basslines, however Fela's own blend included a stronger african melody and tempo which made his own sound more danceable, that's as much as i can contribute 4 now, here's a track 4rm our artist 'DOUBLE SIX' its a 100% afrobeat instrumental but DOUBLE SIX raps on it.the track also features another great nigerian rapper called TERRY THA RAPMAN http://ballberryent.com/entertainment/oyibo_man.mp3 download, listen and enjoy, PHAT WALL MUZIK STUDIOS 2348033422206.,PEACE!!! 4rm our artist 'DOUBLE SIX' its a 100% afrobeat instrumental but DOUBLE SIX raps on it.the track also features another great nigerian rapper called TERRY THA RAPMAN http://ballberryent.com/entertainment/oyibo_man.mp3 download, listen and enjoy, PHAT WALL MUZIK STUDIOS 2348033422206.,PEACE!!!
