A middle-aged woman, Esther Anichukwu, on Wednesday returned the dowry sum of N6,000 to her estranged husband, Mr.Osita Anichukwu, after their marriage was dissolved at a grade 'A' Customary Court, Mushin, Lagos.

Esther had approached the court in April seeking the dissolution of her three-year-old marriage that is blessed with a female child, who is barely two-year- old.

She had told the court that her husband was cruel, irresponsible, quarrelsome and beat her up on the slightest provocation. Besides, she accused her husband of "kidnapping" her daughter when she was eight-month-old and since then prevented her from having access to her daughter.

However, successive attempt by the Esther's lawyer, Mr. J.O. Makwe, and other third parties to bring a lasting solution to the protracted rift between the couple were unsuccessful.

Earlier on June 27, Makwe told court that he had been given a mandate by Esther's relations to go ahead with the divorce suit filed in by her client and return the N6,000 dowry they had received when the marriage was contracted.

He had told the court that the decision was taken when both families could not resolve the issue.

While delivering judgement, the president of the court, Dr. G.A. Ipaye, explained that Esther failed to visit her daughter, which she claimed was kidnapped at her in-laws place, as directed by the court on June 13.

"In line with the prayer of the petitioner, the marriage is hereby dissolved granting a free divorce. The two parties are free to go their separate ways and cohabit with any partner of their choice without any molestation or hindrance from either side," Ipaye said.

He also advised the two parties to maintain absolute peace, adding that Osita should take charge of the custody of the child pending final adjudication of the family court.

However, he added that Esther should be given unrestrained access to the child.

When asked about her reaction to the judgement, Esther said, "it's over. Now, I am free."

So her life was in the man's hands before she returned the dowry?. Was she enslaved by the man?.

This is a good idea, just that she should also return all the money he spent on her.
