If not for the Japa crew by now I am sure most Nigerians won't be able to sleep with two eyes closed kidnapping, arm robbery would have been worse. How many Nigerians are even gainfully employed with unemployment more than 40%,most families in the south south and southwest depends on their relatives in Europe. Most skilled workers like bricklayers, carpenters, welders, plumbers get huge patronage from building projects funded from Nigerians in diaspora. Even most businesses in Nigeria gets huge patronages as a result of inflows of monies from those in diaspora. Where will a university graduate that is unemployed have over 20m to fund a building project. 2 Likes |

Brexxit:lol. Do the math. Don't just make assumptions. Check GDP of naija, check diaspora remittance of 9ja. Do the the %, and see if your statement supports it. Na majorly diasporans dey build houses for Naija now abi. Very funny Anyway, I just hope the next CBN gov has an actual brain. Can't wait to get back to the 'balling times'. 2010 to 2014 was awesome! Abi diasporan fe je egba back then ni. Lol. Dem no rish, but naira don penkelemesi bayi. Eyin japarians, e Tete japa finish o, Ka le Tete settle. One good tin, about this time, is you can buy houses, cars for cheap. That I love, about this time..lol Ps you don't need 20m to fund building project o, no be by force to build mansion na. Right now, houses are being sold for pittance. Patience and 5-6m you'll get a 3-bed that may not be more than 5years it was built. 1 Like |

Lets compare like for like, what jobs will pay the $40k you reference in the US and what jobs are you referring to in Nigeria where you will be able to save the amount you mentioned? The reason for my comment is you are looking at new immigrants who are hustling and trying to establish themselves to people in Nigeria who are already established and part of the system. You also ignore the fact that those immigrants now get access to better government services many of which are non existent in Nigeria so there is little need to save as much as we do in Nigeria. Not saying you still don't need to save but there is less need as there are safety nets in place. Also, earning power is significantly higher e.g. in the US when they are established and have better jobs, and their kids grow up in the system and skip the immigrant hustling stage and graduate with better paying jobs in the US. Example if their child gets a graduate job with e.g. Deloitte Consulting in the US they can start with $70k annual salary at age 23 or 24 which will grow quickly as they grow so don't limit your comparison to just new hustling immigrants trying to find their feet. Compare that to his mate graduating in Nigeria probably closer to age 30 due to strike upon strike upon strike, and how much will the graduate earn starting with Deloitte in Nigeria? Willy the pay growth be comparable to the graduate in the US? Another important point, Nigerians in Canada, the US etc. will be able to save more if they are not sending money back to Nigeria to support family or investments etc. We can all agree that there are significantly more Nigerians abroad sending money to support family members in Nigeria than vice versa. naijaboy99: 4 Likes |

Just yesterday, I told myself I will not join these 3 classes of Nigerians below to say "there is nothing abroad" until I have traveled abroad and lived there for a while. 1) Wealthy Nigerians 2) Nigerians with USA and UK Passport. 3) Privileged Nigerians. Why? Becos I am none of the 3 in any way. It's only GOD I look unto. 4 Likes |

naijaboy99:my guy, I dey tell you say for Nigerians it is possible. See that article, it is accurate, but won't be the reality of MOST Nigerians or other Africans who grew up with a diff culture, including financially. Tru tru most of the white are shit poor cos their countries actively shackle them with a credit culture. They simply don't know how to save! But most Nigerians and Africans come from a saving culture, not a credit culture. We save, and buy what we want and typically pay in full, and assume full ownership. They don't...and yes some Nigerians are getting sucked in as some have admitted here, one year and already jumping into debt, loans, mortgage and all that. That will be the new trend, just watch. 9ja people and follow-follow mentality na 5&6! Lol..Gbese ro won lorun. The verse in the Bible is my guide. The borrower is a slave to the lender! In Business, the key word here being business, using OPM (other people's money) makes sense at some point. It is called financial leverage in business. Having a levered business helps with some savings tax wise and in other ways too,. But for now I relish the fact that all I have is mine 100% including my business. Maybe when it grows to a very large level, I can add financial leverage. Oyinbo and some 9ja now, don't do that.. it is debt debt debt, not even for business, but for luxury. The mortgage could have a business angle (rental income) but it will take decades to make sense when you do the math, that is if your wife no use separation/divorce collect am from you before jungle mature sef..lol. So, again I say for Nigerians with their head screwed on properly, it is possible. 2 Likes |

Treadway:Then we can conclude that they are slaving away. If whites can't save it and Nigerians can, then that means they are not living the canadian or american dream. We too can slave ourselves down here and be able to save a lot. Like everyone should stay in a face me I slap you and work three jobs. Thanks |

naijaboy99: One thing you fail to grok is that what you call slaving over there is a luxury living over here and a lot of Nigerians would prefer to be slaves over there than a king here. Why must you compare people doing menial jobs abroad with high income earners or businessmen here. Does that not tell you the difference in standard of living. Most of The white people paying and turning Yahoo boys to millionaire here are not rich there. What does that tell you.. To Nigerians good living conditions don't matter as long as they're making money. All they know in this country is money money money money. It's no wonder yahoo, kidnapping and ritualism is rampart. You would think we are the richest people in earth |

Coquinoqui: Live life oh. There's more to life than working crazy. The amount you make is too small to be having such savings. You make 1k and save about 250 weekly. What's even the essence of struggling to save? Go to concerts, go on a cruise, engage in fun activities. Advise the Ghanaian babe not to work like craze. depending on what she does there can be health implications later in life. When I was crazy about money I easily made 4k weekly but now I'm on a different mission in life. 4 Likes 1 Share |

naijaboy99: The mindset of many of those living in diaspora is work, work and work. make money forgetting that before they were born there was money and after they die there will be money. You're right that many are actually slaving away. The funny thing is those at the lower income bracket struggle to save more and put the money in the bank. As far as I'm concerned there's no need struggling to save. First live life and enjoy yourself and what comes after that can be saved if necessary. 4 Likes 1 Share |

ttmacoy: You made some valid points. What's the essence of saving. I don't understand why many Nigerians in diaspora live in self denial. The system is designed to thrive in debt. Advanced economies are designed to work on credit. Consumer credit is an important element of the United States economy. The US has a Domestic Credit To Private Sector 217 % in 2020, one of the highest in the world. Money should be used for productivity. There's no correlation between your savings and your financial status, those at the lower income bracket struggle to save more. People should live life first and plan reasonably instead of aggressive savings. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Treadway: Moreover, diaspora remittance is not actually coming from many Nigerians in abroad ridden with loans/debts to service their house mortgage or cars not is it coming from many who are saving to pay tuition huge fees. This remittance is mostly coming from exporters. They export snails, dey pepper, honey etc just name it and need to remit the money back to nigeria. That money is been sent back by business men not employees that barely survive. 1 Like |

Go on vacations, concerts, beaches, cinemas, outings, picnics etc And these things are not even that expensive to start with. Just that people are so programmed that it is only work, work, work they see. If not working, they are bleeping or using the little money they used to buy a car chasing ladies up and down. 2 Likes |
