According to the National Biodiversity Network, over a quarter of the 107 mammal species in the UK are in danger of going extinct. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has listed 68 fish species as threatened or endangered. In the UK, at least one in seven species of reptiles is either extinct or in danger of going extinct. In the last 200 years, seven breeding bird species in the UK have gone extinct, and 43% of the country’s bird population is now under risk. Since the Industrial Revolution, about half of Britain’s biodiversity has been destroyed, along with more than 400 species. Even worse, that is only the beginning. If no quick effort is taken to stop it, 1,188 more could occur during the course of the following century.
