World Pharmacist Day 2022; All Pharmacists/pharmacy Students, Let's Celebrate by RxCatalyst: 10:09am On Sep 25, 2022 |
WORLD PHARMACIST DAY 2022 Congratulations to all Pharmacists and Pharmacists in training in the world as we commemorate the World Pharmacist Day today, Sunday, 25th of September with the theme; PHARMACY UNITED IN ACTION FOR A HEALTHIER WORLD. It is a day to celebrate the profession, create awareness, emphasize and show-case their positive impact on healthcare in the world. I will be using this medium to enlighten the public about the roles of pharmacist in public health care. According to John F. Kennedy, the role of a pharmacist is indispensable. Here are some facts you need to know about who a pharmacist is; 1. PHARMACISTS ARE NOT DRUG SELLERS: Many people have the misunderstanding that Pharmacists are just people who sell or dispense drugs, like people in drugstores or patent medicine store. Yes, that's partly true, but it's the microcosm of what we do. Some even mistake them as those who hawk drugs in buses and lorries, that is not true. A pharmacist compounds drugs and extemporaneous preparations for specific patients as needed. Pharmacists can also advise patients on how to take their medications appropriately and stay healthy. He/she also has a counseling role for patients with smoking cessation, drug addiction, alcoholism and other toxic substances. Pharmacists not only dispense medications, but also provide pharmaceutical care to patients. The community pharmacists play a vital role in healthcare; they provide medical monitoring services such as blood pressure, temperature, auscultation, first aid services, and more. In addition to dispensing, pharmacists are active in patient counseling and drug therapy management to better understand the medication you are about to take and other precautions you need to take. 2. PHARMACISTS ARE THE HUB OF DRUG INFORMATION: Pharmacists are well-trained professionals in drugs and drug-related information, and no other health care professional knows better than a pharmacist. You have to study a lot to become a pharmacist. To earn a pharmacy degree requires a total of 5 years (plus the anomalous unknown x years) of rigorous training for B.Pharm while the Pharm.D degree requires 6 years excluding the compulsory one-year internship. In a nutshell, a pharmacist is a medicine expert. They provide drug information to other healthcare provider and the patients. The pharmacist tells the patient which drugs to take with or without food, which drugs should not be taken at the same time, and which drugs are not recommended. This is to ensure the patient gets optimal benefits from the medication. Patients who do not follow the pharmacist's instructions are at risk of worsening their illness and reducing their quality of life. 3. A PHARMACIST CHECKMATE DOCTOR'S PRESCRIPTION: When a doctor's prescription is handed to a pharmacist, the pharmacist first verifies whether it is truly from a doctor or whether the patient is attempting to counterfeit it in order to misuse or self-medicate with the drug (drug abuse now common in the society). Sometimes, the prescriber may not have objective information on medicine. The pharmacist also checks for drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, allergies, and adverse effects that could harm the patient under certain circumstances like pregnancy, being a child or an elderly being. The pharmacist additionally checks for the medication's accuracy and dosage according to the patient's needs. The prescribing physician is then informed of any concerns or errors and given recommendations. 4. PHARMACISTS WORK IN VARIETY OF PLACES: Pharmacists do not only work in hospitals or in the community pharmacies. Additionally, pharmacists work for the government, administrations (e g NAFDAC, NDLEA), pharmaceutical manufacturing companies, public health, academic institutions, research areas (e.g NIPRD) and other areas. Pharmacists utilize their knowledge in Pharmaceutical chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacy, Administration Pharmacy, Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Microbiology to develop the medical system, counsel and ensure drug distribution is rational and endeavor to end the threat of counterfeit drugs (e.g Dora Akunyuli). 5. PHARMACISTS ARE QUINTESSENTIAL: Pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare provider in the community. They are always the first point of contact. Pharmacists play a crucial role in the delivery of healthcare. 6. UNIQUE AND LUCRATIVENESS: Pharmacy is a lucrative and unique profession which every Tom, Dick and Harry aspire to practise. The line of pharmacy or pharmacy as a career option is not only alluring, but also lucrative. The lucrativeness of pharmacy profession is only as a result of the various ways through which a fully trained and licensed pharmacist can exploit his or her various opportunities to make good returns. Doctors can only make prescription but a Pharmacist produce and dispense those drugs. Consult your Pharmacist about your medications. Happy World Pharmacist Day 2022. #WPD2022
