The prize committee stated he finished the reputedly impossible challenge of cracking the genetic code of certainly one of our extinct relatives – neanderthals.
He also completed the “sensational” feat of discovering the previously unknown relative – denisovans. His work helped explore our personal evolutionary history and the way human beings unfold across the planet.
